Top-Ranked North Dakota Blanks CC, 2-0

Box Score | Highlights from NCHC.tv

Top-ranked North Dakota completed its weekend sweep of Colorado College with a 2-0 victory Saturday night at The Broadmoor World Arena. Christian Wolanin and Shane Gersich scored to keep UND unbeaten at 6-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. CC, meanwhile, fell to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the NCHC.

Junior goalie Tyler Marble made 40 saves, half of them during UND's four power plays, but allowed Wolanin to open the scoring 8:30 into the contest with a wrister from the top of the circle that squeezed right between Marble's legs.

The Tigers tried to take an early lead with three quality shots in the first minutes of the game, including a pair by freshman Trey Bradley from point blank range, but UND goalie Matt Hrynkiw came up big. One of the shots was so close to going in that the referees reviewed it but determined that Hrynkiw got his pad on it before crossing the goal line.

Eleven of the 20 shots Marble faced during UND's power plays came after freshman Tanner Ockey was called for five-minute checking from behind penalty and assessed a game misconduct with 2:43 left in the opening frame. North Dakota put five shos on Marble before the period ended, then six more early in the second, but the Tigers killed the penalty and tried to get some momentum.

Gersich wiped out that momentum midway through the second period with his second goal of the series. After gathering the puck along the left boards in the neutral zone, he found himself on a 2-on-1 and fired a wrister through Marble's legs for an unassisted goal.

The Tigers tried to get back in the game later in the second when UND's Drake Cagguila was whistled for a five-minute contact to the head penalty and game misconduct of his own with six minutes left in the period. However, just 22 seconds into the power play, CC's Cody Bradley was sent off for tripping, followed by a two-minute delay of game penalty by UND's Rhett Gardner. Colorado College mustered just two shots on Hrynkiw during the nearly five full minutes of power play.

"We did a great job in the second period when it was five-on-five," head coach Mike Haviland said. "The intensity was there but then it went down during the power play. We had a chance to get back in the game, but I'm not sure we won a faceoff the entire power play.

Tyler (Marble) was outstanding for us tonight and our penalty kill unit did a good job. We just have to bury our chances when we have a 5-on-3."

North Dakota was 1-for-8 on the power play this weekend, including an 0-for-4 performance on Saturday. CC went 0-for-5 on Saturday and 1-for-12 for the series.

The Tigers open play in the annual battle for the Gold Pan next weekend with a home-and-home series with the University of Denver. The two teams will play at Magness Arena on Friday, Nov. 6 and The Broadmoor World Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7.
