HighlightsAustin Plevy notched a hat trick and Dennis Kravchenko added a goal and two assists to lead UMass past Colorado College, 6-2, Friday night in the season opener at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Plevy gave the Minutemen a 3-0 lead just 1:47 after teammate Shane Walsh scored on a rebound midway through the second period. CC freshman
Trevor Gooch made it 3-1 with a nifty wraparound that beat UMass goalie Henry Dill for his first career goal, but Plevy put the Minutemen back up by three with the game-winner at the 14:38 mark of the second period after taking a nice pass through the crease from Kravchenko and stuffing it past CC netminder
Tyler Marble.
Â
Plevy completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal just 51 seconds into the third period.
Â
The Tigers refused to give up, however, and closed the gap to 5-3 as senior
Hunter Fejes scored a power play goal off a rebound at the 5:41 mark after Patrick Lee was called for a five-minute major face-masking and a 10-minute misconduct penalty and freshman
Trey Bradley posted his first career goal at the 11:20 mark off a rebound from a shot by fellow freshman
Mason Bergh, who had two assists on the evening.
Â
Walsh was called for a five-minute kneeing major and sent off with a misconduct with 7:38 to play in the third, but CC could not capitalize, even with Marble on the bench for a 6x4 advantage for the final 40 seconds.
Â
Kravchenko wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted empty-net tally in the final minute.
Â
The Tigers doubled up UMass in shots on goal, 42-21, outshooting the visitors 14-7 in the first period and 19-5 in the third. CC dominated play in the first 20 minutes, but UMass' Ray Pigozzi put his team ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal with just 17 seconds left in the frame. Dill finished with 39 saves while Marble had 15.
Â
"We played a great first period," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "And in the third I loved how we battled and kept it interesting. Their goalie played very well tonight."
Â
The same two teams play again Saturday night, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
