Schweiss Scores MW's Top Offensive Award

Colorado College's Sarah Schweiss, who struck for six game-winning goals in conference play, was voted Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference in a ballot of the league's head coaches.

Senior defender Alexis Long and freshman midfielder Lauren Milliet were honorable-mention all-MW selections.

Despite being the focus of every opponent's defensive game plan, Schweiss led the Mountain West in total shots (89), shots per game (4.45) and game-winning goals (6) during the regular season. She also tied for second in goals (10) and finished fourth in points (22).

In conference games only, CC's co-captain ranked first in shots (53), goals (9) and game winners (6). She also was second in points (18) and points per game (1.64).

"The award is well deserved," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "In my opinion, she by far had the most impactful season of any player in the conference. What she did in a leadership role and with her soccer ability, it's one of the more impressive things I've seen in my coaching career. I'm proud to be her coach and I'm proud of the way she represents Colorado College."

With her game-winning goal at Air Force, Schweiss continued her climb in the Colorado College record book. She now ranks eighth in program history with 27 career goals, tied for eighth with 67 career points and tied for 16th with 13 assists.

Schweiss also became the first Tiger to score double-digit goals in back-to-back seasons since Martina Holan accomplished the feat three times from 1995-97.

The Monument, Colo., product has factored in seven of the team's eight game-winning goals this season, scoring six and setting up one. She now has 12 career game winners and seven game-winning assists.

Her growing list of accolades include being named the espnW National Player of the Week and Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for the second time after scoring back-to-back 'Golden Goals' during victories over Colorado State (1-0) and Wyoming (2-1).

Long anchored Colorado College's back line which recorded three of its four shutouts in conference games. She started all 18 games in which she played and was fourth in minutes played. The senior co-captain scored CC's first goal in the victory at Air Force.

Milliet finished second on the team with four goals and 10 points, and was third in minutes. She scored a pair of game winners, including the only goal against the University of Northern Colorado in the season opener.

Colorado College kicks off the Mountain West Championship on Tuesday night against the University of Wyoming at 7 p.m. PT.
