Trinity Upsets CC in SCAC Semifinals

Box Score No. 7 Colorado College was upset by Trinity University during the semifinal match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships, Friday in Georgetown, Texas.
 
Despite season-high performances and double-doubles by outside hitters Abbe Holtze and Reagan Folaron, the first-seeded Tigers fell to Trinity, 3-2.
 
Holtze led the team with a season-high 23 kills and tied a season-high 19 digs to earn her 17th double-double of the season. Folaron earned a season-high 18 kills and picked up 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.  
 
Senior Courtney Birkett also earned a double-double, leading the team with 32 assists, while adding 13 digs. The right-side hitter also added nine kills and a team-best four service aces.
 
Trinity, which was the No. 4 seed going into the tournament, got off to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of 25-20 victories, forcing CC to come from behind to tie the match.
 
The Tigers won the third set, 25-23, after Folaron hit a kill from freshman Aria Dudley to take a 24-23 lead. Sophomore Sarah Barker sealed the win with a service ace.
 
The fourth set went the distance as the two teams were tied at 28-28. Dudley gave CC match point when Birkett set up a ball for her to put down. The Tigers won the set, 30-28, with a block by sophomore Glenna Yancey and Birkett.  
 
Kirby Smith was a key player in the fifth set for Trinity as she helped score the remaining points for TU. The score was tied at 12-12, but Smith combined with Rebecca Hayes on a block to give them the 13-12 edge. Smith sealed the victory with a pair of kills from Erika Edrington.
 
Trinity (24-12) was led by Smith with 18 kills. Edrington orchestrated the offense with 53 assists, while Hayes combined on a team-best nine blocks.
 
Senior Sophie Merrifield anchored the Tiger defense with a match-best 27 digs as CC dropped to 33-3 on the season.
 
Colorado College will play for third place on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT against either Southwestern University or Texas Lutheran University.
