Box ScoreThe Colorado College hockey team got back on track Friday night, defeating Alabama Huntsville 5-2 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. Senior
Hunter Fejes (2g,1a) and junior
Luc Gerdes (1g,2a) paced the Tigers with three points apiece as CC won for the first time on the road this season and the fourth time in its last six games overall.
Â
The two teams seemed to play uninspired hockey for the first 10 minutes, then Fejes opened the scoring with nine minutes left in the period. Gerdes won a faceoff in the Chargers zone and sent the puck over to Fejes, who blasted a one-timer past UAH goalie Carmine Guerriero.
Â
UAH evened the game with a shorthanded, unassisted tally by
Adam Wilcox at 12:34 of the frame on a breakaway after causing a turnover at center ice. The 1-1 tie would hold heading into first intermission.
Â
"We played a real good first period tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "It was 1-1 but we felt like we could have done a little more."
Â
CC pulled away late in the second period with a pair of goals within a span of 44 seconds. Junior
Matt Hansen put a wrister from the left faceoff circle past Guerrero with 1:46 left in the frame for his first goal of the season, assisted by Fejes and freshman
Andrew Farny. Then, after CC won the ensuing faceoff, Fejes scored his second of the game with 1:02 remaining, an unassisted goal for the eventual game-winner.
Â
The Tigers (4-15) piled it on in the third as Gerdes made it 4-1 when he redirected a blast by freshman defenseman
Ben Israel 3:12 into the third period and junior captain
Sam Rothstein scored off a Gerdes pass about two minutes later for a 5-1 edge. Gerdes and Fejes became the first CC duo with three points in the same game since Alexander Krushelnyski and Rylan Schwartz each had three points against Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 19, 2013. Â
Â
"We needed our upperclassmen to step it up and that whole line (Fejes, Rothstein, Gerdes) has been playing well for us," Haviland said. "It helps our younger guys get more confidence."
Â
The Chargers (3-12-2) scored a late power-play goal for the final tally of the game.
Freshman goalie
Jacob Nehama made 34 saves in his fourth victory of the season, while Guerriero made 27 before giving way to Matt LaRose after Rothstein's goal in the third period.
Â
The two teams will wrap up the 2015 calendar year on Saturday night, beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).
