Box ScoreColorado College closed out the 2015 calendar year with a 2-1 loss to Alabama Huntsville Saturday night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.
Â
The Tigers, who were looking for their first sweep on the road since Nov. 2-3, 2012, struck first as junior captain
Sam Rothstein scored his second goal of the weekend just 19 seconds into the second period. Sophomore
Teemu Kivihalme and junior
Luc Gerdes each recorded an assist on the play. Gerdes continued his scoring tear with his 10
th point (2g,8a) in his last seven games.
Â
Adam Wilcox evened the game at 1-1 with a power play goal that snuck past CC goalie
Jacob Nehama at the 8:34 mark of the second period.
Â
The Tigers (4-16) had a golden opportunity near the end of the second period when UAH's Hans Gorowsky was given a 5-minute major penalty for checking from behind on CC defenseman
Ben Israel with 4:35 remaining in the frame.
Â
CC did not get anything going on that power play, putting just two shots on UAH goalie Matt Larose (35 saves). The Tigers struggled on the power play all weekend, coming up empty on 11 opportunities.
Â
"We were a little snakebit tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Larose gave them a chance to win and we just didn't get it done on the power play. The five-minute major was a big difference. For the most part we didn't execute the way we should have and gave them a ton of momentum."
Â
UAH (4-12-2) capitalized on that momentum shift when Richard Buri scored the game-winner at the 2:56 mark of the third period.
Â
Nehama finished the game with 31 saves as CC outshot UAH 36-33. The Tigers wrapped up the first half of the season by winning four of their last seven games.
Â
"We are improving for sure," Haviland said. "We are still learning what it takes to win hockey games but we need to compete for 60 minutes."
Â
The Tigers return to action on Jan. 8, 2016 with a two-game series at St. Cloud State.
