Tigers Complete Sweep in Dramatic Fashion

Hunter Fejes and Luc Gerdes seem to have something going here. For the second consecutive night, Gerdes assisted on Fejes' game-winning goal, this time with 1:13 remaining in regulation to give Colorado College a 3-2 victory and a weekend sweep of Miami at The Broadmoor World Arena.

Gerdes forced a Miami turnover in the CC end, found Fejes streaking ahead of the pack and the senior from Anchorage, Alaska, beat Miami goalie Ryan McKay for his third goal of the weekend and CC's third consecutive victory after starting the season with 13 straight losses.

"This was a great weekend for us," head coach Mike Haviland said. "Another great play by Luc tonight. He won two battles then Hunter finished it off."

Freshman Jacob Nehama, the winning goalie in all three of the games, did his part by making 34 saves, including 14 in the third period. He was stellar early in the final frame, sweeping away six Miami shots in the first two minutes.

"We never stopped tonight, from the cage out," Haviland said. "We got better as the game went on. I am really proud of how this team is playing."

Miami (5-9-2, 2-7-1-1 NCHC) got on the board first in part due to a fortunate bounce. CC's Duggie Lagrone sent a clearing pass off the board but it hit one of the officials and stayed in the Miami zone. The RedHawks' Jack Roslovic collected it, moved to the net and sent a shot off the post that went right to Sean Kuraly, who buried a shot from the right circle past Nehama at the 7:44 mark of the first period.

The Tigers (3-13-0, 2-6-0 NCHC) struck back with two goals in the second period, including a power-play goal by senior Cody Bradley at the 9:02 mark. Freshman Andrew Farny sent a shot wide that banked off the back wall. Freshman Trey Bradley poked it to his brother at the side of the net and Cody fired it past Miami netminder Ryan McKay.

Freshman Mason Bergh put CC up 2-1 with his second goal of the season at the 15:05 mark of the middle frame. Farny once again started the play by finding Matt Hansen above the left circle. Hansen's shot was saved by McKay but Bergh was standing on the doorstep to backhand it into the net.

It looked like the Tigers were going to get out of the period with a lead until Kevin Morris scored from a tough angle along the right boards to even the score at 2-2 with 1:12 left in the middle stanza.

The weekend sweep is CC's first at home against a league opponent since Nov. 9-10, 2012 against Bemidji State, back when the Tigers were a member of the WCHA. The three-game winning streak is the longest since February of 2014.

"Winning cures a lot of things," Haviland said. "Our guys went through a tough stretch, but now realize how to win games. They believe in each other."

The Tigers travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., next weekend to take on Western Michigan Dec. 11-12. The two teams are tied for seventh in the NCHC with six points apiece.
