PhotosColorado College put up a good fight Saturday night but could not overcome two Miami power-play goals and a goal of its own that was waved off midway through the third period as the RedHawks captured a 2-1 victory at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Scott Wamsganz scored a power-play goal and
Tyler Marble made 31 saves for the Tigers.
Â
After a scoreless first period in which each team mustered only five shots, Miami's Louie Belpedio put the RedHawks ahead 1-0 at the 12:59 mark of the second period when he took a cross-ice pass from Austin Czarnik and his shot apparently went in off a CC defender. After the Tigers'
Luc Gerdes took a hooking penalty later in the period, Sean Kuraly took the puck to the net and squeezed a backhander past Marble just before colliding with CC's netminder for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Wamsganz cut the lead in half with his seventh goal of the season with just 53 seconds remaining in the second. With CC on the power play,
Jaccob Slavin's shot from the high slot was saved by Miami goalie Jay Williams but the puck popped out in front of the net and Wamsganz knocked it out of the air and into the net. Slavin posted his 11
th assist of the season while
Cody Bradley notched his team-leading 14
th on the play.
Â
Miami (18-9-1, 11-6-1-1 NCHC) dominated the play for most of the second period, outshooting CC 22-8, but Marble came up with some big saves to keep the score close.
Â
CC (5-21-1, 1-16-1 NCHC) answered the bell in the third period and controlled the action for most of the period. It looked as though the Tigers tied things up with 9:05 remaining when
Hunter Fejes stormed the net and put a shot on Williams from in front and Bradley knocked home the rebound. However, after a lengthy review, the goal was waved off for goaltender interference by Fejes.
Â
The Tigers almost tied it again but Slavin's blast from the point caromed off the crossbar with 2:45 left in the game. CC pulled Marble with two minutes left and had a power play during that time but couldn't get anything past Williams.
Â
Charlie Taft tied his career high with seven shots, tying Miami's Riley Barber for game-high honors, while Williams made 26 saves for Miami.
Â
"We were good for the first and third periods tonight," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "I am proud of how we competed in the third period."
Â
CC resumes its battle with the University of Denver for The Gold Pan next weekend. The two teams meet in Colorado Springs on Friday, Feb 20 and in Denver on Saturday, Feb. 21.
