No. 9 Denver Doubles up CC, 6-3

Box Score

Zac Larazza scored twice and No. 9 Denver scored three times in the final 4:45 Saturday night to complete a 6-3 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. The Pioneers swept the season series from CC, which was led by Jaccob Slavin's two goals.

Larazza, who had a goal and two assists on Friday, opened the scoring on Saturday with a power-play goal at the 8:41 mark of the first period. Joey LaLeggia's wrister from the point was in the glove of CC goalie Tyler Marble but he couldn't hold on to it and Larazza put the rebound in the net.

Denver (18-10-2, 11-8-1-1 NCHC) held the play for most of the first period, outshooting the Tigers 22-5 after putting 27 shots on net in the entire game on Friday. Marble's 21 saves were the most in his career for one period.

Josiah Didier gave Denver a 2-1 lead just 1:44 into the second period after getting a pass down the right side from Gabe Levin and putting shot over Marble's right shoulder.

CC (5-23-1, 1-18-1-0 NCHC) capitalized on their only power play opportunity of the night as Slavin scored just six seconds after DU's Nolan Zajac was called for interference. Cody Bradley won the ensuing faceoff and Scott Wamsganz tapped it back to Slavin, who moved to the slot and sent a wrister that snuck past DU goalie Tanner Jaillet to cut the Pioneer lead in half at the 13:16 mark.

Joey LaLeggia moved the lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal of his own at 15:36 of the second period. Trevor Moore found LaLeggia streaking down the slot and gave him a perfect pass from the goal line and LaLeggia beat Marble with a wrist shot for his 11th goal of the season.

The Tigers came out like gangbusters in the third period, tying the game with a pair of goals in the first 80 seconds of the frame. Slavin connected on his second goal of the game just 57 seconds into the period with a shot from the right circle that beat Jaillet top shelf, then Peter Maric scored his third of the weekend just 23 seconds later as he sent a backhander through Jaillet's legs while falling to the ice right in front of the net. Matt Hansen assisted on Slavin's goal, while Luc Gerdes and Christian Heil earned helpers on Maric's tally.

"I liked our response coming out in the third," said CC head coach Mike Haviland. "I liked the way we played for stretches tonight."

Larkin Jacobson notched his second game-winner in as many nights with 4:45 remaining in the third with a nice give-and-go play with Matt Tabrum. Jacobson took the puck at his own blue line, raced down the left side and sent a back pass to Tabrum, who passed it right back to Jacobson and he placed a backhander past Chase Perry, who had replaced Tyler Marble with 7:34 left after the Tiger starter headed to the locker room with dehydration.

Larazza added an insurance goal with 2:32 left when he redirected a Will Butcher shot past Perry and Trevor Moore scored an empty-netter with 30 seconds remaining.

Denver finished with 46 shots, compared to 26 for CC. Marble, who was outstanding in the third period before leaving the game, made 38 saves, while Jaillet made 23 for DU.

The Tigers host Western Michigan in the final home series of the season next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28 at the Broadmoor World Arena.
