Saturday's Game NotesColorado College's
Tyler Marble recorded a career-high 50 saves Friday night as the Tigers and Western Michigan skated to a 2-2 tie at The Broadmoor World Arena. WMU's Nolan LaPorte scored the game-tying goal in the third period then notched the only goal in the shootout to give the Broncos the extra point in the standings.
Â
LaPorte took a pass from Justin Kovacs and placed a shot over Marble's left shoulder from the bottom of the right circle 7:08 into the third period to even the score at 2-2. Neither team scored the rest of the period or in the five-minute overtime session as CC went to its second shootout of the season, both coming against the Broncos. The first five shots between the two teams were saved before LaPorte made a few moves and placed a backhander past Marble, who helped CC snap its 10-game losing streak with his career night.
Â
The Tigers opened the game with a flurry of shots and put two of them past WMU goalie Lucas Hafner in the first four minutes.
Luc Gerdes snuck a shot inside the near post from the left side of the net on the power play for a 1-0 lead just 2:49 into the contest.
Matt Hansen and
Hunter Fejes each earned an assist on Gerdes' third goal of the season.
Â
Colorado College (5-23-2, 1-18-2-0 NCHC) took a 2-0 lead 37 seconds later when
Peter Maric scored his fourth goal of the season, all coming in the last three games, after taking a pass from
Jaccob Slavin and putting a shot from the right side of the net past Hafner.
Christian Heil posted his third assist in as many games on the play. Â Â
Â
The Tigers had a great opportunity to get a third goal when WMU's Paul Stoykewych (brother of CC senior Peter) was called for a five-minute major penalty for contact to the head and given a game misconduct with 9:35 remaining in the first period. CC couldn't get anything past Hafner and the power play was cut short when Fejes went to the box for tripping with 1:13 remaining on the man advantage.
Â
CC outshot Western Michigan, 14-7, in the first 20 minutes, but allowed the Broncos 45 shots on goal the rest of the way while getting only 11 of their own. Marble equaled his career high with 21 saves in the second period, then followed it up with 20 in the third.
Â
"We were really good in the first period," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Then we stopped skating in the second. We had some good chances to get a third goal in the first period, but we can't give up the number of shots we did tonight."
Â
Sheldon Dries put WMU (12-14-5, 5-11-5-4) on the board 7:09 into the second period after he gathered a rebound to the right of Marble, cut across the crease and flipped the puck into the net. Colton Hargrove and Chris Dienes assisted on the goal.
Â
Marble kept the Broncos at bay the rest of the game, including two huge saves on Frederik Tiffels and Kyle Novak towards the end of a WMU power play with just under four minutes remaining in the third period. Marble's 50 saves were the most by a CC goalie since
Josh Thorimbert had the same amount in a 2-2 tie at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 17, 2014.
Â
"Tyler was really good tonight," Haviland said. "He made some great saves for us. This was definitely his best game of the season." Â Â
Â
The same two teams play again Saturday night in CC's final home game of the season. The team's six seniors,
Jordan DiGiando,
Aaron Harstad,
Peter Stoykewych,
Charlie Taft,
Scott Wamsganz and
Ian Young, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
