Saturday's Game NotesPeter Maric and
Matt Hansen each scored a goal and
Tyler Marble made 32 saves to lead Colorado College to a 2-2 tie with No. 8/7 Nebraska Omaha Friday night at CenturyLink Center.
Cody Bradley scored the only goal during the shootout as the Tigers picked up the extra point in the standings.
Colorado College (6-23-3, 2-18-3-1 NCHC) extended its season-high unbeaten streak to three with its first shootout win since Nov. 22, 2013 at St. Cloud State.
"We have been playing pretty good hockey lately," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "The guys believe they can win. They have a business attitude and are doing things the right way."
The Mavericks (17-10-6, 11-8-4-3) took a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal by Justin Parizek 8:31 into the opening frame. Joel Messner grabbed the puck after a CC turnover in the Tiger end and found Jake Guentzel, who had a 2-on-1 with Parizek and fed him perfectly in front of Marble.
CC evened things up at 1-1 with a power-play goal at the 12:54 mark of the second period when Maric took a pass from
Aaron Harstad in the slot and placed a backhander over the right shoulder of UNO goalie Ryan Massa.
Peter Stoykewych also earned an assist on Maric's fifth goal of the season, all coming in the last five games.
Parizek put the Mavericks back in front with 2:39 left in the second with his second goal of the game. Tyler Vesel sent a pass that went right across the goal mouth and Parizek beat Marble from the far post on the power play.
CC's
Christian Heil then made a spectacular individual play in the final minute of the period to make it a 2-2 game. Heil raced down and stole the puck from UNO's Austin Ortega in the Tiger end, took it the length of the ice and, from the left boards, found a streaking Hansen in front with a perfect pass. Hansen's first goal of the season tied the game at 2-2 with 26.4 seconds left in the second period.
"I saw him out of the corner of my eye when I crossed the blue line and slowed down a bit to bring their defenseman over to me," Heil said. "Matt used his speed to get to the net and it paid off."
Massa came up big for UNO in the second period, stoning CC's
Luc Gerdes on two breakaways and
Sam Rothstein on one. Massa also made a big poke-check on Heil as he and Gerdes came in on a 2-on-0 rush with 11:30 left in the third period.
Marble put together his third consecutive impressive outing, including making five saves on UNO's first power-play opportunity, and stopped Jake Randolph, Jake Guentzel and Ortega in the shootout. Bradley led off the shootout with a wrister that beat Massa and it was just enough for CC's second shootout win in seven tries in the two-year existence of the NCHC.
CC will close out the regular season Saturday night against UNO, then travel to NCHC champion North Dakota next weekend for the league's first-round best-of-three series. UND defeated Miami, 2-1, Friday night to claim the outright regular-season title.
