Fresh off a solid performance last week in the Colorado Cup, Colorado College plays host to the University of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Aug. 30, in its only game of the week. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Stewart Field.
Â
CC is 1-1-0 after splitting a pair of matches last week. The Tigers began their 2015 campaign with a 1-0 victory over the University of Northern Colorado at Stewart Field, but dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Colorado two days later in Boulder. Pitt takes a 1-0-1 record into a Thursday tilt with Northern Colorado in Greeley. The Panthers opened the season with a 1-1 tie against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday, Aug. 21, and then crushed Robert Morris University, 6-0, on Sunday.
Â
Colorado College and Pittsburgh are squaring off for just the second time on Sunday. In the only previous meeting between the schools on Sept, 2, 2011, the Tigers overcame an early 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 tie in the Pitt Soccer Classic at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Â
Colorado College returns five starters and 12 veterans from last season's squad that posted a 12-5-4 overall record and finished fourth in the Mountain West with a 7-3-1 conference mark. Headlining CC's list of returning players is senior co-captain/midfielder
Sarah Schweiss (Monument, CO), a first-team all-Mountain West selection who led the Tigers with career highs of 10 goals and 24 points. Anchoring the defense is senior co-captain
Alexis Long (Oak Hills, CA), who started 37 of 42 games during the last two seasons when CC posted a combined 27-9-7 record and 20 clean sheets. Colorado College's back line includes three more starters in senior
Samantha Curran (Austin, TX) and sophomores
Ali Basom (Enola, PA) and
Anne-Sophie Lapointe (Quebec City, Quebec).
Â
Colorado College started eight underclassmen – four sophomores and four freshmen – in both games last weekend. While sophomore goalkeeper
Louisa Mackenzie (Albuquerque, NM) made her first two appearances, Basom, Lapointe and forward
Maddi Dunn (Auburn, CA) saw considerable playing time a year ago. First-year forward/midfielder
Lauren Milliet (Durango, CO), defender/midfielder
Anna Gregg (Sacramento, CA) and midfielder
Madison Tominello (Monument, CO) started each contest, while midfielder/forward
Rae Conlon (Shaker Heights, OH) and midfielder
Kelli Sullivan (Sammamish, WA) each started once. Midfielder
Clara Richter (Stockholm, Sweden) came off the bench in both contests, while defender
Rachael Martino (Colorado Springs, CO) saw her first action against the Buffs.
Â
Much like Colorado College, Pitt features a young lineup with one senior, four juniors and 19 underclassmen. A pair of first-year forwards led the Pitt offense after two games. Jarena Harmon notched the ninth hat trick in program history and tied the school record with three goals during the 6-0 win over Robert Morris. Kaylee Rabatin set up all three tallies for the second highest single-game total ever by a Panther. Junior Taylor Francis played all 200 minutes in goal, posting a 0.45 GAA along with a .667 saves ratio. Francis, who has started 26 consecutive games for Pitt, led the ACC in total saves (120) and saves per game (6.67) in 2014.
Â
Colorado College continues its three-game home stand by hosting Iowa State University and the University of Cincinnati on Sept. 4 and 6, respectively. The following week, the Tigers travel to Ogden, Utah, to face Weber State University on Friday, Sept. 11, then return home to entertain the University of Kansas on Sunday, Sept. 13.
