Heartbreak In Overtime

Box Score In a game of missed opportunities for both teams, the University of Pittsburgh struck for the only goal 4:45 into overtime and escaped with a 1-0 victory at Colorado College on Sunday.

The Panthers (2-1-1) became the first side to leave Stewart Field with a win since the University of Memphis posted a 2-1 overtime triumph on Oct. 5, 2012. Since then, the Tigers were 20-0-4.

Sophomore forward Taylor Pryce settled a pass from freshman forward Sarah Krause in the center of the field and as she was dribbling from right to left, slipped a pass through the Tiger defense.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Moreira took a touch about 14 yards away from the net and then used her right foot to punch the ball just over the outstretched hand of Colorado College sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie.

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Francis steered aside 10 shots, including a diving stop at the left post on a blast from CC freshman midfielder Lauren Milliet a little less than nine minutes into the game.

Francis made another big-time save midway through the second half when she lunged toward the right post to deny a shot by senior midfielder Sarah Schweiss from the top of the penalty area.

"It's important that we put together a full 90 minutes," Schewiss said. "It's important to fight from the beginning all the way through to the end of the game.

"It's early in the season and we have a lot of new faces. We are still getting used to how everyone likes to play. It will come."

Schweiss and Milliett launched four shots apiece for Colorado College, which slipped to 1-2-0.

Mackenzie made three saves for the Tigers. She smothered a direct kick by Roosa Arvas in the 34th minute and then tipped a high shot from Arvas off the crossbar midway through the second half.

Pitt recorded an 18-15 edge in total shots, but CC placed 10 on frame compared to only four for the Panthers.

The Tigers earned four corner kicks, while Pitt had three.

"We don't like the way we feel right now," Schweiss said. "We'll put this game behind us, have a good week of training and come out strong in our two home games next weekend."

Colorado College's three-game home stand continues on Friday, Sept. 4, when Iowa State University visits Stewart Field. Two days later, the Tigers play host to the University of Cincinnati.
