CC Overpowers No. 17 Wisconsin-Whitewater

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The 13th-ranked Colorado College volleyball team improved to 7-0 on the season as the Tigers defeated Chapman University and No. 17 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Friday during the first day of the Colorado College Invitational.
 
"We a great team effort tonight from a number of different players," head coach Rick Swan said. "It was a fun match, we went toe-to-toe against a tough, ranked opponent."
 
Senior Courtney Birkett and junior Abbe Holtze each earned a double-double in a 3-1 victory over the 17th-ranked Warhawks during the final match of the day. Birkett led the team with 29 assists and added 15 kills, while Holtze earned a team-best 18 kills along with 17 digs.
 
The back row was a key factor for CC as it out-dug Wisconsin-Whitewater 83-68. Senior Sophie Merrifield anchored the defense with a team-high 27 digs. Birkett also contributed with eight digs, while sophomore Amelia Mouw added seven.
 
The first two sets were a battle as each set went to extra lengths. CC came up with the win in the first set that saw 18 ties with a tight 29-27 victory on a pair of attack errors by UWW. The Warhawks came back in the second set with a 26-24 win to knot the match.
 
The Tigers were strong in the final two sets, hitting a combined 32 kills, while giving up only a combined 22 kills to earn a 21-25 win in the third set and a 25-19 win in the fourth set to seal the victory.
 
With the win, Colorado College gave Wisconsin-Whitewater its first loss of the season as it dropped to 6-1.
 
In the first match of the day CC swept Chapman University, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15.
 
Sophomore Reagan Folaron led the team against the Panthers with a team-best eight kills and 10 digs, while Birkett added a team-high 17 assists along with eight digs and seven kills.
 
Colorado College returns to action on Saturday in the final day of the CC Invitational. The Tigers take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, who is receiving votes in the AVCA poll, at noon. CC finishes the tournament against Bluffton University at 6 p.m.
