Tigers Fall to Kansas In Overtime

Box Score For the third consecutive game, the Colorado College women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Unfortunately, the Tigers don't have a victory to show for those well-played first halves.

On Sunday, freshman Kelli Sullivan scored the first goal of her career in the 17th minute for the Tigers, but Kansas tied the game in the second half and scored the game-winner early in the second overtime to steal a 2-1 victory at Stewart Field. CC is 0-2-1 in its last three contests.

Grace Hagan took a centering pass from Ashley Williams in front of the net and placed a header past CC goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie just 1:08 into the second overtime period to give Kansas (3-4-1) the sudden-death victory.

"I am just gutted for our girls," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "I keep saying we are getting better. Our record may not show it but we are so much better than we were three weeks ago. Today we battled with a very good and athletic soccer team."

Sullivan gave Colorado College (1-5-1) the lead when she put home a rebound between the legs of Kansas goalie Maddie Dobyns. Fellow freshman Lauren Milliet's original shot clanged off the left post and went right to Sullivan in front of the net.

KU's Liana Salazar evened the score in the 55th minute after taking a centering pass from Grace Hagen at the top of the box, slid a few steps to the right and fired a shot past CC goalie Louisa Mackenzie.

Senior captain Sarah Schweiss nearly gave the Tigers the lead late in the second half, but her shot from 21 yards beat Dobyns, but went square off the crossbar with 4:17 remaining.

CC outshot Kansas 14-13, but the Jayhawks held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Mackenzie made five saves for the Tigers, while Dobyns had three for KU.

The Tigers close out their non-conference schedule next weekend with matches against Cal-State Bakersfield on Friday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m., and Baylor on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m.
