Merrifield Reaches Milestone in Pair of Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Senior Sophie Merrifield became the second player in Colorado College volleyball history to reach the 2,000 career dig mark as the Tigers beat Centenary College and Austin College in the opening day of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action, Saturday afternoon in Shreveport, La.
 
Merrifield led the team with 16 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Centenary to earn 1,998 career digs. The defensive specialist hit the 2,000 career dig mark on her second dig of the match against Austin.
 
Merrifield went on to pick up a team-best 20 digs in the 3-1 victory over the 'Roos to earn 2,018 career digs. She needs only 178 more digs to break the all-time career-dig record of 2,195, which former Tiger Laura Goldsmith (2009-12) currently holds.
 
The 11th–ranked Tigers began the day in dominant fashion, beating Centenary in three sets, 25-9, 25-8, 25-16. CC hit a season-best .371 attack percentage on 39 kills in 70 attempts with 13 errors.
 
The Tigers, with the help of senior Kaimara Herron, held the Ladies to a -.087 attack percentage, forcing Centenary into committing 21 errors in 80 attempts with just 14 kills. Herron was solid at the net leading the team with a career-high nine blocks, which included a career-high eight block assists.
 
CC was led offensively by junior Keli Sherwood with nine kills, while junior Abbie Holtze and senior Courtney Birkett each added eight kills apiece.  Holtze also added seven digs and a career-high four service aces.
 
Colorado College won its second match of the day in four sets against Austin, 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-14. With the win the Tigers improved to 11-1 on the season and 2-0 in SCAC play.
 
Holtze led the offense against the 'Roos tying her season-high 18 kills, while earning her fourth double-double of the season with 17 digs. Birkett also added 13 assists and nine kills to aid the offensive attack.
 
CC had a strong serving game against Austin as it tallied a season-best 14 service aces. Birkett led the team with a career-high five service aces, while freshman Myca Steffey-Bean added three aces.
 
Colorado College finishes the weekend against the University of Dallas on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
