Tigers Remain Undefeated in Conference

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The No. 13 Colorado College volleyball team took over first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference as it remains undefeated after beating No. 18 Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University on Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
 
CC handed Southwestern its first conference loss of the season as it beat the Pirates, 3-1 in the opening match of the day. The Tigers finished the day with a 3-0 sweep of Texas Lutheran.
 
CC has improved to 16-1 on the season and 7-0 in conference play, while Southwestern dropped to 14-2 and 5-1 in SCAC action.
 
Junior Abbe Holtze became the ninth player in Colorado College history to record 1,000 career kills. The outside hitter entered Sunday's game against Southwestern needing only seven kills to hit the milestone.
 
Holtze hit the 1,000 kill mark late in the third set, CC was down 20-24, but sophomore Sarah Barker set up a ball for Holtze to put down and earn her 1,000th kill. Holtze finished the match with nine kills to earn 1,002 career kills.
 
In its first match of the day, CC beat No. 18 Southwestern in four sets, 25-17, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21. The Tigers outhit the Pirates 64-45 in kills and out-dug Southwestern 84-66.
 
Senior Courtney Birkett led the team with her third triple-double of the season on 27 assists, 16 kills and 14 digs. Senior Kaimara Herron tied her career-high 11 kills, while adding a team-best four blocks.
 
Senior Sophie Merrifield led the defense with 24 digs, while Holtze and sophomore Reagan Folaron added 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
 
CC finished the day with a dominate, 25-16, 25-15, 25-10, victory over Texas Lutheran. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to a -.060 hitting percentage on 24 errors in 116 attempts with just 17 kills.
 
Holtze led the team with her sixth double-double of the season on 15 kills and 12 digs. Folaron also earned her third double-double of the season with a team-best 19 digs and added 10 kills on offense.
 
Merrifield finished the day with 17 digs, while junior Keli Sherwood added a team-best five blocks against the Bulldogs, who dropped to 10-2 on the season and 4-2 SCAC play.
 
Colorado College returns home to host its Pikes Peak Challenge on Oct. 2-3. The Tigers will open the tournament against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday and will finish the tournament on Saturday against Elmhurst College and Cornell College.
