Cincinnati Rallies To Edge Tigers

Box Score Sophomore forward Maddi Dunn staked Colorado College to a 1-0 lead 38 seconds before halftime, but the University of Cincinnati answered with a pair of second-half tallies and escaped Stewart Field with a 2-1 victory on an otherwise perfect Sunday afternoon.

Dunn scored on a header from six yards out in the center of the penalty area off of a perfectly-placed cross from junior midfielder Dana Gornick, who won possession along the right edge of the box.

Playing with an increased level of composure, CC limited the Bearcats to only two shots during the first half, but Cincinnati came out with more determination in the second frame.

Senior forward Danielle Rotheram got behind the Tiger defense in the 47th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie smothered the opportunity at the left post.

Less than two minutes later, Mackenzie came off her line to punch away a shot by freshman defender Tiffany Huber, who was left unmarked on the left side of the box.

"We got ourselves into some dangerous situations at the beginning of the second half and Louisa saved us," Colorado College head coach Geoff Bennett said. "We scored one really good goal, but we couldn't get any more to fall. That's been our issue up to this point in the season."

The Bearcats leveled the score in the 66th minute when freshman midfielder Jordan Cotleur chased down a long clear from sophomore defender Vanessa Gilles and put a shot across Mackenzie's body into the left side of the net.

With 6:40 remaining in regulation, UC scored on a similar play, only this time it was Rotheram capitalizing with a shot that went under Mackenzie's arm into the right side.

Mackenzie recorded five saves for the Tigers, who slipped to 1-4-0.

"I'm very disappointed with the result today," Bennett said. "I felt we did everything we could to win, but we gave up a couple of goals that we handed to them. Credit to Cincinnati, their players finished very well.

"We need to learn how to protect leads and battle for 90 minutes and not take a couple of minutes off here and there. I'm very happy with our growth, but at the end of the day we're 1-4. I feel like we should be 3-2. Now we need to win our next four games before we begin our conference schedule."

CC registered a 16-9 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

UC's Sam Pavlika finished with five saves, the best of which was a diving stop on shot by freshman forward Lauren Milliet from 15 yards out on the right side midway through the first half.

Pavlika also got a fortunate break late in the first half when a ball she punched away off of a Tiger corner kick bounced off Colorado College senior defender Alexis Long and then the right post before her defense could clear it away.

"We need to build on this and learn from our mistakes," Long said. "If we work that little bit extra, we can be unstoppable. This team has a bond I've never experienced before. It makes us special."

CC travels to Ogden, Utah, to face Weber State University on Friday, Sept. 11. Two days later, the Tigers return home to host the University of Kansas.
