HighlightsFive seems to be the lucky number lately for the Colorado College hockey team.
Â
The Tigers scored five goals for the third time in the last four games en route to a 5-1 upset victory over No. 12 Omaha Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Five different Tigers scored and three of them, junior
Luc Gerdes and freshmen
Mason Bergh and
Trevor Gooch, each had a goal and an assist as CC won its fourth consecutive home game for the first time since the first four home games of the 2011-12 campaign.
Â
With the victory, CC improved to 6-18-1 overall and 4-10-1 in the NCHC and is just one point behind Western Michigan for seventh place in the conference. The Tigers are 6-5-1 in their last 12 games. Omaha fell to 15-9-1 and 5-9-1 in league play.
Â
"This was a big win for us," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We are finding ways to get points."
Â
After a scoreless first period, Bergh put CC ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal 3:29 into the second period. A shot from the slot by freshman
Andrew Farny was blocked and went right to Bergh, who was skating in from the right circle and beat Omaha goalie Evan Weninger for his third goal of the season.
Â
Gerdes made it 2-0 at the 6:38 mark of the second with a power-play goal of his own. He took a pass from senior
Hunter Fejes and deflected it over Weninger's left shoulder for his sixth tally this season.
Â
The Tigers couldn't quite get out of the period unscathed, however, as Omaha's Brian Cooper cut the lead in half with 1:02 remaining with a shot from the slot that beat CC freshman
Jacob Nehama on his stick side. That was Nehama's only blemish of the game as he finished with 36 saves.
Â
"We were on our heels a bit in the first period," Haviland said. "But (Nehama) made some nice saves and the two power-play goals really got us going."
Â
CC blew the game wide open with three goals in the third period. Gooch asserted himself in the final 20 minutes and gave CC a 3-1 lead at the 9:04 mark. Bergh started the play and freshman
Tanner Ockey's shot was saved by Weninger, but the puck went behind the net and bounced right to Gooch, who was standing by the left post and poked it past Weninger, who finished with 25 saves.
Â
Gooch then started the play that led to an insurance goal by racing the length of the ice to forecheck an Omaha player and get the puck to senior
Cody Bradley, who found junior
Christian Heil streaking towards the far post and had an open net for his second goal of the year with 4:40 remaining in the game.
Â
Senior
Sam Rothstein closed the scoring one minute later with a shorthanded, empty-net goal after Omaha pulled its goalie for a 6x4 advantage. Freshman
Cole McCaskill started the play by blocking an Omaha shot then got the puck to Gerdes, who posted his team-high 11
th assist on the play.
Â
CC's special teams continued to excel. The Tigers were 2-for-4 on the power play and have scored with a man advantage in four of their last five games. Meanwhile, CC killed all six of Omaha's power plays and has erased 52 of its opponents 59 power-play opportunities (88.1%) in league play.
Â
"We had to kill some penalties in the third period to gain the momentum back and that's just what we did," Haviland said.
Â
The same two teams face off Saturday night at 6 p.m. at The Broadmoor World Arena.
