Box ScoreThe Colorado College hockey team posted its first conference road win in the
Mike Haviland era with a 5-2 upset over fourth-ranked St. Cloud State Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Â
Freshman
Jacob Nehama was stellar in the nets, making 47 saves as the Huskies outshot CC, 49-22. Five different Tigers scored to give CC its first road win in league play since a 3-2 victory over Denver on Feb. 21, 2014.
Â
"This was a great win for our program," Haviland said. "Everyone played well, especially Jacob and our defense. I am very proud of the way we performed."
Â
Nehama's 47 saves are the second-most of his career, just shy of the 52 he had at UMass-Lowell on Oct. 16.
Â
Sophomore
Teemu Kivihalme opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 3:08 mark of the first period. Kivihalme put home his third tally of the season with a blast from the point that went top shelf over SCSU goalie Charlie Lindgren's right shoulder.
Â
The Huskies (17-5, 9-3 NCHC) tied things up at the 7:58 mark as David Morley banged home a rebound past Nehama after making a save on a shot by Ethan Prow.
Â
Senior
Hunter Fejes gave CC the lead for good at the 12:30 mark of the opening frame with his team-leading ninth goal of the campaign. Senior captain
Sam Rothstein started the play with a drop pass to freshman
Jake Emilio, whose blast from the slot dinged off the crossbar behind Lindgren. During the ensuing scrum in front, Fejes poked the puck into the net.
Â
The Tigers (5-17, 3-9 NCHC) pulled away with three goals in the second period. Freshmen
Tanner Ockey and
Ben Israel each scored the first goal of his career and Rothstein scored a late power-play goal. Ockey put CC up 3-1 with the game-winner just 2:07 into the frame by taking a nice pass from behind the net by fellow freshman
Trevor Gooch and placed the shot into an open net. Emilio gathered his second assist of the night.
Â
Israel then made it 4-1 midway through the period with a wrister from the left circle off another pass by Gooch. Freshman
Mason Bergh started the play with some solid fore-checking behind the SCSU net.
Â
Rothstein then scored his fifth of the season with just 2:15 remaining in the period. After junior
Luc Gerdes attempted a wraparound, Rothstein was in front and poked the puck past Lindgren for CC's second four-goal lead of the campaign.
Â
SCSU pulled Lindgren, who leads the NCHC with 16 wins, after the second period and the Huskies' Jimmy Schuldt scored a power-play goal at the 6:35 mark of the third period for the final tally of the game.
Â
CC's special teams were outstanding once again Saturday night. The Tigers converted on one of their three power plays and erased all but one of St. Cloud's four man advantages.
Â
The game had a little more meaning for the Tigers as this was the 1,500
th career game for CC's equipment manager, Spud Hamilton. The team presented Hamilton with a plaque before the game.
Â
"We talked before the game about winning this one for Spud," Haviland said. "For all the dedication and hard work he has given this program, the players really respect him and wanted to get this one for him."
Â
The Tigers are idle next weekend before traveling to Grand Forks, N.D., to battle the No. 1/2 North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Jan. 22-23. Â Â Â
