Box Score In its final home game of the season, Colorado College fought through all sorts of adversity to defeat Johnson & Wales University, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Washburn Field.
In the contest that featured as many yellow cards as shots on target,
Sam Markin struck for the only goal in the 31st minute with a curling shot from the lower left side of the box that found the net inside the far post.
Markin took the ball down the left side, maintained his balance after being tripped by JWU defender Dean Rounsevell on an attempted tackle, and launched his shot from 12 yards outside of the left post.
"We are really proud of the effort the guys put forth tonight," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "The game wasn't pretty, but a win is a win and we'll take them all."
At the other end of the pitch,
Keller Mochel made a pair of saves while recording his second clean sheet of the season.
CC's freshman goalkeeper snagged a sharp-angle shot from senior forward Christian Gallegos in the 36th minute and then a header from junior defender Zach Peterschmidt a little more than 10 minutes into the second half.
The Colorado College defense now has posted nine shutouts and lowered its goals-against average to 0.44.
The Tigers, who were without six starters, played the final 11:53 a man down after junior midfielder
Joel Frykholm was sent off after being booked for the second time. Video showed the first card was mistakenly given to him instead of sophomore midfielder
Robert Malone.
Despite playing with a man advantage, the Wildcats managed just one corner kick and a shot by freshman midfielder Kyler Fowkes from 35 yards out that sailed harmlessly high and wide of the frame with just 41 seconds remaining.
"The game was very chippy and we had a lot of young players on the field, but they kept their cool and persevered," Palguta said. "The response to going down a man was impressive."
CC improved to 10-2-1 and reached double-digit victories for the sixth year in a row.
Junior goalkeeper Jordan Collier stopped five shots for the Wildcats, who slipped to 8-4-4.
Colorado College returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday, Oct. 14, when it plays the first of five consecutive road games at Texas Lutheran University.
