Highlights
John Edwardh and Ryan Dmowski each scored twice and Joe Gambardella added a goal and two assists as seventh-ranked UMass Lowell defeated Colorado College, 8-5, Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Edwardh opened the scoring just 3:56 into the contest after a couple of Tigers collided at their own blue line. Gambardella collected the puck and found Edwardh, who had an open net past CC goalie Alex Leclerc. That goal started a barrage of seven scored in the first period between the two teams.
Â
Freshman
Nick Halloran evened the game with his first career goal at the 7:11 mark when fellow freshman
Alex Berardinelli found him in the slot from behind the net and Halloran beat UML goalie Chris Hernberg.
Â
Dmowski scored his first of the game less than two minutes later, but the Tigers tied it again as sophomore
Mason Bergh scored during a delayed penalty off of feeds from fellow sophomores
Andrew Farny and
Westin Michaud. The Tigers did not capitalize during the power play, but shortly after
Trey Bradley was called for hooking, Berardinelli finished a shorthanded 2-on-1 with senior captain
Sam Rothstein to give CC a 3-2 lead.
Â
Lowell's Alex Kamrass scored one minute later and Dmowski notched his second of the period with 2:10 left in the frame to give the River Hawks a 4-3 advantage. Connor Wilson and Gambardella each added a goal in the second period for a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes.
Â
The Tigers picked up the offense again in the third period as junior
Teemu Kivihalme scored 46 seconds in on a 5x3 advantage to trim the lead to 6-4, but Edwardh made it 7-4 at the 2:58 mark. CC hung tough, though, and sophomore
Trevor Gooch notched his first goal of the season to make it 7-5 and it looked as though Michaud cut the lead to 7-6 with a wraparound goal with seven minutes left, but teammate
Cole Josefchak was called for interference in front of the net just before the puck crossed the goal line.
Â
Mattias Goransson scored on the ensuing power play for the final tally of the contest.
Â
"We have to tighten up our defense," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "The first period seemed like there was one goal after another and we came at them strong in the third period, but we just have to tighten up all three zones."
Â
The Tigers struggled again on the power play, converting on just one of seven opportunities, while Lowell (1-0-2), which entered the game with the nation's best power play percentage, was 3-for-5.
Â
UML outshot the Tigers 30-23, and Dmowski, Kamrass and Goransson each posted a game-high four shots. Leclerc made 22 saves for CC, which fell to 1-2 on the season. Â
Â
The same two teams will play on Saturday night, beginning at 7 p.m.
