Box Score Molly Hiniker kept the Colorado College women's soccer team within striking distance with several brilliant saves, but Fresno State capitalized on a fortunate bounce to score the only goal in a defensive struggle on Friday afternoon at CC's Washburn Field.
Hiniker came up big during the first 15 minutes with three stops on Myra Delgadillo, who is tied for second in the Mountain West with eight goals.
Just 3:10 into the contest, the Tigers' first-year goalkeeper came off her line to challenge Delgadillo, who was alone on the left side of the box. Hiniker's pressure forced the shot wide of the left post.
In the eighth minute, Hiniker stopped Delgadillo's blast from 12 yards and then freshman defender
Aleesa Muir blocked a rebound shot by Fresno's junior forward.
Then, at the 15-minute mark, Hiniker was able to grab Delgadillo's chip shot after she got behind the Colorado College defense and chased down a long ball on the right side.
The Tigers nearly broke through in the 17th minute after sophomore forward
Clara Richter worked the ball off the left end line, but starting goalkeeper Alex Best denied a shot by sophomore midfielder
Lauren Milliet from 12 yards out in front of the left post.
The soccer gods smiled on the Bulldogs in the 25th minute when a 35-yard cross from sophomore defender Olivia Muhrbeck glanced off a CC defender and went directly to freshman midfielder Sydni Lunt, who slipped a shot into the right side of the net from the center of the box.
Colorado College came within inches of drawing level midway through the second half. Junior defender
Anne-Sophie Lapointe dribbled through the center of the Fresno State defense, but her shot from 15 yards went off the left post and was cleared away.
Hiniker recorded her final save with 8:01 remaining in the game when she tipped a high shot from Delgadillo over the crossbar. However, the Tigers produced just one corner kick and one shot against the Bulldog defense during the closing minutes.
CC finished with a 9-7 edge in total shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Hiniker stopped four shots for Colorado College, which slipped to 7-10-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the conference.
Best and sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Theroux made one save apiece for Fresno State, which improved to 8-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the MW.
The Tigers play their final road game of the season on Sunday at San Jose State University.
