Colorado College lost the special teams battle at Boston College Friday night. The Tigers were not going to let that happen again on Saturday.
Â
CC used a pair of shorthanded goals in the first period and two power-play goals by freshman
Nick Halloran to defeat New Hampshire, 4-3, Saturday in Durham, N.H.
Â
Halloran broke a 3-3 tie at the 4:33 mark of the third period with a wrist shot that beat UNH goalie Danny Tirone and found the top shelf with CC on the power play. It was almost identical to Halloran's first goal of the game, which put the Tigers ahead 3-1 at the 4:32 mark of the second period. Both goals were assisted by junior
Teemu Kivihalme and sophomore
Trey Bradley, who posted his team-high fourth and fifth assists of the season.
Â
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of shorthanded goals in the first 5:21 of the contest. Sophomore
Gregg Burmaster converted a 2-on-1 with fellow sophomore
Tanner Ockey to score the first goal of career just 2:03 into his first game of the season. Saturday marked Burmaster's first appearance of the 2016-17 campaign.
Â
"(Gregg) gave us great confidence with his early goal tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "He scored against Mount Royal in the exhibition and we had a good feeling about him so he ended up in the lineup."
Â
Senior
Sam Rothstein followed suit just over three minutes later with the second shorty of his career after firing a wrist shot from the top of the right circle past UNH goalie Danny Tirone. Freshman
Alex Berardinelli started the play with a back-check in the Tigers' zone. It was the first time CC had multiple shorthanded goals in one game since scoring two in a 5-4 win over Clarkson on Oct. 12, 2012.
Â
The Wildcats cut the lead in half at the 15:59 mark when Danny Grasso poked in a rebound past CC senior
Derek Shatzer, who made his first start of the season and second of his career. Shatzer, who turned away 20 UNH shots in the first period alone, finished with a career-high 39 en route to posting the first victory of his career.
Â
"It was great to see Derek play well tonight," Haviland said. "He has worked extremely hard and he seemed very calm out there tonight."
Â
After Halloran put CC ahead 3-1 early in the second, the Wildcats once again fought back to Jason Salvaggio scored a shorthanded goal at the 7:51 mark and Michael McNicholas at 9:20 to even the game at 3-3.
Â
CC was 2-for-6 on the power-play and killed all seven penalties. The Wildcats outshot the Tigers. 42-37, while Halloran led all players with eight shots.
Â
The Tigers, who snapped an 11-game winless streak against UNH and won in Durham for the first time since Jan. 4, 1986, are idle next weekend before opening NCHC play at Nebraska Omaha on Friday, Nov 4.
