Ryan Wischow made 31 saves in his collegiate debut to lead the UMass Minutemen to a 3-0 victory over Colorado College Friday night in the season-opener for each team at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.
Â
After a scoreless first period in which the Tigers outshot UMass, 12-4, Jonny Lazarus gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead at the 11:03 mark of the second period with a power-play goal. Lazarus collected the puck in the slot and sent a wrister from the right circle past CC freshman netminder Alex Leclerc.
Â
"After the first couple of minutes, we kind of took over the first period," CC head coach
Mike Haviland said. "It was a good period for us, then we took a couple of undisciplined penalties in the second."
Â
Despite being outshot 31-18 in the game and 14-4 in the third period, UMass added two goals in the final 20 minutes. Anthony Petrella scored just 2:08 into the third period and William Lagesson added the final tally at the 12:25 mark.
Â
Leclerc showed well in his first collegiate appearance, turning away 15 shots, including some from point-blank range.
Â
"Alex looked good tonight," Haviland said. "We just need to help him by executing better on the power play."
Â
The Tigers did not convert any of their nine power-play opportunities and attempted nearly half of their shots (15 of 31) with the extra-man advantage. Conversely, outside of Lazarus' power-play goal, the CC penalty kill was perfect in its other six opportunities.
Â
Junior defenseman
Teemu Kivihalme led all players with six shots, followed by freshman
Branden Makara with five. Shane Bear and Marc Hetnik led UMass with four shots apiece.
Â
The same two teams will meet in the series finale on Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning at 7 p.m. (ET).
