It was freshman night in Amherst Saturday. Five Colorado College freshmen each scored the first goal of his career Saturday as the Tigers defeated UMass, 7-4, at the Mullins Center to improve to 1-1 this season.
Â
Freshman
Branden Makara scored twice and fellow frosh
Kristian Blumenschein added a tally as CC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Makara took a drop pass from sophomore
Trey Bradley (three assists) and fired a shot past UMass starting goalie Ryan Wischow just one minute into the contest. Blumenschein scored his first career goal off a rebound from freshman
Bryce Van Horn's shot at the 4:49 mark and Makara again scored off a feed from Bradley at the 7:15 mark that sent Wischow to the bench in favor of Nic Renyard.
Â
Later in the period, freshman defenseman
Cole Josefchak scored on the power play to make it 4-1 with under two minutes remaining to give the Tigers their first four-goal period since Feb. 9, 2013, in a 6-5 overtime victory over Denver.
Â
After UMass' Ray Pigozzi cut the lead to 4-2 early in the second period, Van Horn found himself in the way of a Josefchak shot from the point, but Van Horn collected it and beat Renyard from the slot to make it 5-2.
Â
The Minutemen scored the next two goals, including one by Jonny Lazarus with 7:53 left in the third period to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4, but with less than three minutes remaining, freshman
Alex Berardinelli blocked a UMass shot from the point, strided down the left side and placed a wrister from the left circle past Renyard. Sophomore
Westin Michaud, who missed the entire 2015-16 season, completed the scoring with an empty-netter, marking his first career goal, in the final minute.
Â
The Tigers' seven goals were the most in a game since an 8-4 victory over Boston College on March 25, 2011 in first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
"I like the way we played for 60 minutes," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We never panicked on the bench and it was good to see the guys play with some composure."
Â
Josefchak's power-play goal was the only one of the night for CC as the Tigers went 1-for-6 with an extra man. The Tiger penalty kill was especially strong Saturday as the Minutemen converted on only one-of-nine opportunities and CC killed 14 of its 16 penalties over the weekend.
Â
Blumenschein, Josefchak and Van Horn each had a goal and an assist Saturday, while yet another freshman, goalie Alex Leclerc, stopped 14 shots in posting the first victory of his career.
Â
The Tigers host 8
th-ranked UMass-Lowell next weekend, Oct. 14-15, at The Broadmoor World Arena.
