Tigers Can't Solve 13th-Ranked St. Cloud State

Box Score 13th-ranked St. Cloud State scored three times in the first period and never looked back in a penalty-filled 7-3 victory over Colorado College Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.

Senior captain Sam Rothstein scored twice and sophomore Cole McCaskill added his first goal of the season for the Tigers, who lost sophomore forward Westin Michaud to a 5-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind just 5:21 into the contest.

The Huskies (5-4, 1-2 NCHC) got on the board at the 8:37 mark when Jon Lizotte scored his first career goal. Mikey Eissemont made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at the 10:14 mark and Jack Poehling added one at 12:57 for a three-goal advantage.

The Tigers (3-6, 1-2 NCHC) had an opportunity to close the gap late in the first period when Will Borgen was called for a 5-minute major boarding penalty, but could not get anything past SCSU goalie Zach Driscoll, who finished with 20 saves.

SCSU added two goals midway through the second period before Rothstein put the Tigers on the board at the 14:11 mark of the second with a power-play goal. Ben Israel and goalie Jacob Nehama assisted on the play, with Nehama picking up his first career point.

McCaskill cut the lead to 5-2 at the 4:18 mark of the third period, but SCSU's Judd Peterson answered just 23 seconds later to push the lead back to four. Blake Winiecki made it 7-2 at the 16:14 mark and Rothstein closed out the scoring with his second of the night at 16:57. Rothstein had two goals for the second time in his career, equaling the feat last season against Air Force.

Including a 5-minute and game misconduct call for contact to the head against SCSU's Ben Storm in the third period, the two teams combined for 71 penalty minutes. The Huskies were 2-for-6 on the power play, while CC was 1-for-7.

The Tigers outshot St. Cloud State, 23-19, and Nehama made nine saves before giving way to senior Derek Shatzer at the beginning of the third period. Shatzer made three saves in the final 20 minutes.

"We got out-battled tonight," head coach Mike Haviland said. "We can't get into an up-and-down game with them, but I did not like the way we lost battles tonight. That hasn't been in our game this year but it was tonight."

The teams will close out the two-game series Saturday night beginning at 7:07 p.m.
