Wisconsin Rallies to Beat Tigers

Box Score Highlights

Wisconsin scored twice late in the second period and Jack Berry turned away 11 of the 12 shots he saw as the Badgers defeated Colorado College 2-1 Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.

The Tigers (3-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period as sophomore Mason Bergh took a pass from freshman Branden Makara and sliced past the Wisconsin defense and beat Berry one-on-one for his team-high fifth goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Ben Israel also assisted on the play.

That was all the Tigers could muster as Wisconsin (7-4) battled back with a pair of goals in the middle frame. After freshman Bryce Van Horn was called for a roughing penalty during a scrum after the play, Will Johnson evened the game a 1-1 with a power-play tally at the 14:59 mark. Johnson took a pass from Max Zimmer and put a shot between CC freshman Alex Leclerc's legs.

Just 1:24 later, Grant Besse scored the game-winner after taking a shot from below the right circle that was deflected into the air above Leclerc and fell behind him into the net. Seamus Malone and Jake Linhart assisted on Besse's goal.

Leclerc finished the game with 31 saves, including a spectacular one on a breakaway by Badger captain Luke Kunin in the final minute of the first period that maintained CC's 1-0 lead.

"Alex played a really good game for us tonight," head coach Mike Haviland said. "He made some big saves. I know he would like to have that second goal back. The puck just went up in the air and had eyes and fell into the net. Still, that was his best performance since he's been here."

There were only five penalties called in the game, with all three against CC coming in the second period and Wisconsin taking one in each of the first and third periods. The Badgers were 1-for-3 on the power play while CC was 0-for-2.

"I thought two of our three penalties were undisciplined," Haviland said. "We need to be smarter. Now we have to turn the page and move forward."

The Tigers look to bounce back on Saturday against Air Force, beginning at 6:07 p.m. The Pikes Peak Trophy will be up for grabs in the schools' only meeting this season.
