Air Force Doubles Up Tigers

Box Score Colorado College got two goals from sophomore Westin Michaud and one from sophomore Mason Bergh Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as Air Force downed the Tigers, 6-3, at The Broadmoor World Arena.

Jordan Himley had two goals and an assist and Evan Giesler scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Falcons claimed the Pikes Peak Trophy.

Air Force (7-5-2) scored four unanswered goals after Michaud opened the scoring at the 9:59 mark of the first period. Fellow sophomore Tanner Ockey collected the puck behind the net after an Air Force turnover and found Michaud, who beat Air Force goalie Shane Starrett for his second goal of the season.

Matt Koch evened the game at 1-1 with a strange goal at the 13:55 mark of the opening frame. After retreating to his own goal line while killing a penalty, Koch cleared the puck towards the CC net and it shorthopped Tiger goalie Alex Leclerc and into the net. The Falcons took advantage of that momentum as Himley scored on a deflection and Kyle Mackey added a power-play goal in the final four minutes of the frame for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Senior Derek Shatzer replaced Leclerc after the first period and gave up the only goal in the second. Giesler flew down the slot and took a pass from Even Feno right in front and tipped it past Shatzer for a 4-1 lead nearly six minutes into the period.

The Tigers (3-9-0) made it very interesting in the third period with a pair of goals that cut the lead to 4-3. Bergh scored his team-high sixth of the season with a spectacular individual effort at the 7:23 mark. He collected the puck in front of the net and looked as though he was going behind the net for a wraparound, but instead tucked the puck inside the post behind Starrett.

Michaud then captured the first two-goal game of his career at the 11:43 mark when he took a pass from freshman Kristian Blumenschein from behind the net and fired a rocket from the slot to make it 4-3.

The jubilation in the arena was short-lived, however, as Giesler scored just 12 seconds later on a deflection, then Himley wrapped up the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute.

After recording just 12 shots on goal against Wisconsin Friday night, the Tigers came back with 33 on Saturday, compared to 23 for Air Force. Starrett finished with 30 saves, while Leclerc had eight and Shatzer nine.

The Tigers had seven opportunities on the power play, including three in the third period, but came up empty. Air Force converted on one of its power plays.

CC begins its quest for the Gold Pan next Friday, Dec. 2, when it hosts second-ranked Denver at 7:37 p.m.
