Tigers Drop 6-4 Decision to Omaha

Box Score Highlights

Mason Bergh had two goals and an assist and Luc Gerdes scored twice, but it wasn't enough as Colorado College dropped a 6-4 decision to Omaha Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

After losing to the Tigers, 2-1, in the NCHC opener on Friday, the Mavericks (4-3-1, 1-1 NCHC) came out on fire and put two power-play goals on the board in the first 10 minutes of a penalty-filled first period. Luc Snuggerud scored from the point just 3:47 into the contest and Austin Ortega made it 2-0 at the 9:13 mark. Eight penalties were called in the first period Saturday, compared to seven the entire game on Friday.

The Tigers (3-5-0, 1-1 NCHC) bore down the rest of the period and their hard work paid off when Bergh cut the lead to 2-1 with just 2:13 left in the first with the teams skating 4-on-4. Bergh skated in front of Omaha goalie Kris Oldham and redirected a shot by sophomore Ben Israel between Oldham's legs for his second tally of the weekend. Israel recorded his first point of the season and freshman Alex Berardinelli collected his third assist of the year on the play.

The Mavericks pushed the lead to 5-1 with three goals in a span of 4:38 midway through the second period. Teemu Pulkinnen made it 3-1 at the 8:34 mark, then just seconds after CC junior Teemu Kivihalme clanged a shot off the pipe, Zach Jordan collected a pass from David Pope and beat CC goalie Jacob Nehama on a breakaway for a 4-1 lead at the 11:31 mark. Ortega scored his second of the game and the eventual game-winner at 13:12 to make it a four-goal advantage.

"We made some mistakes in the second period and all of a sudden, it's 5-1," Colorado College head coach Mike Haviland said. "We can't take that many penalties against a very potent power play."

The Tigers didn't pack it in and Gerdes picked a good time to score his first goal of the season, poking home a rebound at the 16:06 mark to make it 5-2. Bergh, who assisted on Gerdes' goal, then made it 5-3 with his second of the contest at the 18:17 mark on the power play for the first three-point game of his career.

CC continued to play well in the third period but could not get anything past Oldham for most of the frame. Bergh nearly collected a hat trick but hit the pipe on the power play nearly seven minutes into the period.

Omaha took a 6-3 lead with a fluky goal at the 16:53 mark after Nehama came out the net to poke the puck towards the side boards, but as Tyler Vesel was skating towards Nehama, the puck bounced off Vesel's leg and back into the net.

Gerdes collected the second two-goal game of his career by scoring the final tally of the game with 33 seconds left in the game. Berardinelli and Israel assisted on the play as each recorded the first two-assist game of his career.

"We didn't quit tonight and played well in the third period," Haviland said. "It's tough to win two games in a row in this league, especially on the road. We have played well in the third period all season which shows a lot of the character and chemistry on this team."

CC outshot the Mavericks, 35-33, and Gerdes led all players with a career-high nine shots. Oldham made 31 saves, while Nehama had 27. Omaha was 2-for-5 on the power play and CC converted just one of its five opportunities.

The Tigers return home for the first time in nearly a month to host St. Cloud State, Nov. 11-12, at the Broadmoor World Arena.
