Tigers Drop Heartbreaker to Miami in Overtime

Box Score Josh Melnick scored 1:34 into overtime to lead Miami University to a come from behind 3-2 victory over Colorado College Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.

The RedHawks (4-8-5, 1-4-3-1 NCHC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals 3:44 apart in the third period to send the game to the extra frame.

In overtime, Carson Meyer's shot from the point was blocked and Melnick took a shot from the side of the net trickled past CC goalie Alex Leclerc for the game-winner.

The Tigers (3-12-1, 1-6-1-0 NCHC) struck first as freshman Alex Berardinelli blocked a shot from the point by Chaz Switzer, cruised in all alone against Miami goalie Chase Munroe and buried a wrist shot over Munroe's left shoulder for his third tally of the season just 4:47 into the contest.

Sophomore Mason Bergh scored his team-high seventh goal of the season to give CC a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. Berardinelli and fellow freshman Nick Halloran found themselves on a 2-on-0 with Munroe but Berardinelli sent a shot wide. With Munroe out of position, Berardinelli tried to corral the puck and it rolled to the slot where Bergh fired a one-timer into the net.

The Tigers continued to hold the 2-0 lead until Willie Knierin cut the lead in half at the 10:02 mark of the third period when he took a pass from Karch Bachman from behind the net and put a point-blank shot past Leclerc.

The RedHawks evened the score after Leclerc played without his stick for nearly two minutes and Miami had an extra skater on the ice due to a delayed penalty. With Leclerc holding a teammates' stick, Kiefer Sherwood scored on the 6-on-5 advantage when he poked the puck into the net at the 13:46 mark.

Miami outshot Colorado College, 33-20, including a 17-5 advantage in the third period. Leclerc finished with 30 saves, while Munroe had 18. For the second straight night, neither team scored on the power play. CC was 0-4, which included one for nearly four minutes after a 5-minute major charging penalty on Miami's Louie Belpidio midway through the second period.

The Tigers are idle until Wednesday, Dec. 28, when they play Merrimack in the first round of the Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla.
