Box Score Highlights
Nick Halloran scored 1:02 into overtime to give Colorado College a 2-1 victory over Cornell in the championship game of the 2016 Florida College Hockey Classic Thursday night in Estero, Fla.
Â
Halloran collected the puck at the top of the left circle and snapped a wrister over the left shoulder of Cornell goalie Hayden Stewart for his second career game-winning goal.
Â
Freshman goalie Alex Leclerc was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after allowing just one goal in two games and junior defenseman
Teemu Kivihalme was named to the all-tournament team.
Â
"This was a really good, hard-fought game," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "It was a great team effort and I am really proud of these guys right now."
Â
After a scoreless first period, senior
Luc Gerdes put the Tigers ahead 1-0 with a shorthanded breakaway goal just 1:01 into the second period. Gerdes stole the puck at the red line, skated in all alone and beat Stewart for his fourth goal of the season and second shorty of his career.
Â
Cornell's Jake Wiedner evened things up at 1-1 at the 4:19 mark of the third period with a power-play goal, but the Tigers held steady and Leclerc made an outstanding glove save off a one-timer by Mitch Vanderlaan from the slot with just under six minutes remaining to keep it even.
Â
The Tigers (5-12-1) had a power-play opportunity at the end of regulation and into overtime, but could not convert. CC was 0-for-6 with a man advantage, while Cornell (8-4-1) was 1-for-6.
Â
"Our PK did a great job tonight," Haviland said. "Luc's goal was a big momentum swing for us and the whole penalty kill kept us in the game."
Â
Leclerc made 23 saves and posted the third victory of his career. He stopped 49 of 50 shots during the tournament.
Â
"Alex did a great job of protecting the puck and not giving up second chances," Haviland said. "He is really confident right now."
Â
The Tigers, who won their first holiday tournament since the Great Lakes Invitational in 2005, travel to top-ranked Minnesota Duluth, Jan. 6-7.
