Leclerc's 33 Saves Not Enough As Denver Sweeps CC

Box Score Highlights

Second-ranked Denver rallied for three consecutive goals Saturday night to defeat Colorado College 3-1 at Magness Arena.

The Tigers (3-11-0, 1-5-0-0 NCHC) scored first for the fourth time in their last five games when sophomore Westin Michaud put a one-timer past Evan Cowley at the 5:32 mark of the opening period. Sophomore Tanner Ockey fed Michaud with a beautiful pass from behind the net for his sixth helper of the season, tying fellow sophomore Trey Bradley for the team lead.

Denver (11-2-3, 5-0-3-2 NCHC) struck just 25 seconds later as Dylan Gambrell took a centering pass from Will Butcher and fired a shot past CC freshman Alex Leclerc. Evan Janssen then gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead with 47.7 seconds left in the first with power-play goal from the slot that beat Leclerc, who set a career-high with 16 saves in the first period and ended up tying his career-high with 33 for the game.

"Alex played great for us again tonight," head coach Mike Haviland said. "It's a good sign for our hockey team. He is coming into his own and getting more and more confidence."

Colorado College had a golden opportunity to even the score with a 5-on-3 advantage for 54 seconds midway through the second period, but could not get anything past Cowley. The Tigers were 0-for-5 in the second period alone on the power play and 0-for-6 for the game. They have not scored with a man advantage in the last four games.

Towards the end of the penalty-filled second period, Logan O'Connor put the Pioneers ahead 3-1 with a shorthanded goal with 7.2 seconds left in the period that saw just eight minutes of 5-on-5 hockey.

O'Connor nearly scored another shorty in the first minute of the third period, but Leclerc saved the clean breakaway. The Tigers then had back-to-back chances a few minutes later, but senior Luc Gerdes and freshman Bryce Van Horn each placed a shot just wide of Cowley, who finished with 19 saves.

"I liked our compete level and we battled hard again tonight," Haviland said. "We just need to get more action in front of their net. We are getting shots, but we need more bodies in front."

The Tigers travel to Oxford, Ohio, to take on Miami University next weekend, Dec. 9-10 in the final games before Christmas break.
