Highlights from NCHC Referee GoProPlaying in front of the largest crowd ever to see a Colorado College hockey game, the Tigers dropped a 4-1 decision to the University of Denver in the Battle on Blake at Coors Field Saturday night.
Â
With 35,144 fans in stands for the first outdoor game in the 66-year history of the rivalry, the 10th-ranked Pioneers utilized a pair of fortunate bounces to take a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Â
A centering pass from Jarid Lukosevicius glanced off CC defender
Cole McCaskill's skate at the edge of the crease and went into the right side of the net past goalie
Jacob Nehama.
Â
Less than two minutes later, a strange bounce off the board in the left corner went directly to Colin Staub, who beat Nehama with a wrap-around at the right post.
Â
The Tigers cut the deficit in half with a little less than four minutes remaining in the second period when McCaskill beat DU netminder Tanner Jaillet with a shot from the right circle inside the near post.
Â
The Pioneers regained control early in the third period by scoring a pair of power-play goals in a span of 15 seconds.
Â
Danton Heinen struck with a two-man advantage 2:51 into the frame, and then Dylan Gambrell closed out the scoring seconds later.
Â
DU outshot Colorado College, 47-25. Nehama finished with 43 saves for CC, while Jalliett stopped 19 shots for the Pioneers. The two starters gave way to backups
Tyler Marble (CC) and Evan Cowley (DU) for the last 4:02.
Â
"I didn't mind our first period and we stayed around with our goal," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "Then they get the 5-on-3 and made us pay. We need to get back to the way we were playing a couple of weeks ago."
Â
The Tigers travel to Oxford, Ohio for a weekend series against the University of Miami, Feb. 26-27.
