Box ScoreMiami University scored once in each period and killed off two major penalties Friday night to defeat Colorado College 3-0 in Oxford, Ohio.
Â
The Tigers, who outshot Miami 18-6 in the third period and held a 31-26 advantage for the game, could not convert a five-minute major penalty in each of the last two periods and allowed a shorthanded tally during the five-minute power play in the second period.
Â
CC (6-24-1, 4-16-1 NCHC) had several opportunities to get on the board early, including a shot by senior
Cody Bradley less than six minutes into the game that rattled off the far pipe, one of three that CC clanged off the iron.
Â
After freshman
Nate Kwiecinski was called for a roughing penalty at the 8:13 mark of the first period, Miami struck first as Keifer Sherwood fired a one-timer past CC goalie
Jacob Nehama 27 seconds into the power play.
Â
The RedHawks (14-14-3, 8-11-2-2 NCHC) made it 2-0 midway through the second period with a shorthanded goal by Taylor Richart during a five-minute power play after Scott Dornbrock was called for interference. Miami controlled the play throughout until Richart found himself all alone at the top of the right circle and beat Nehama with a one-timer from the top of the right circle. The Tigers were unable to get a shot on goal during that five-minute stretch. Â
Â
The Tigers, who were 0-7 on the power play against the nation's second-best penalty-killing squad, had nearly seven minutes of power-play time, including 49 seconds with a two-man advantage, in the third period. Bradley hit his second pipe of the night and
Luc Gerdes and
Hunter Fejes were stopped by Miami goalie Jay Williams on breakaways in the final frame. Williams notched the shutout with 31 saves.
Â
"It's tough when you don't get a shot on goal during a five-man advantage and they get a goal," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "They have one of the best penalty kills in the country and we didn't take our game up a level. We have to bear down and score some goals."
Â
Josh Melnick put the game away with 1:32 left with a wrister from the slot that went top shelf past Nehama, who finished the game with 23 saves.  Â
Â
The two teams will battle again Saturday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. (ET).
