HighlightsColorado College played a real solid game for 57 minutes Saturday night in the series finale against Minnesota Duluth at AMSOIL Arena, but the Bulldogs scored on the first shot of the game then added two in a span of 53 seconds late in the contest to steal a 3-2 victory from the Tigers.
Â
"We played a pretty good game tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We are just making mistakes at crucial times of the game."
Â
With CC holding a 2-1 lead, UMD's Andy Welinski fired a slapshot from the point that got past CC goalie
Jacob Nehama to even the score with 3:35 remaining in the third period. Alex Iafallo, who had two goals in UMD's 5-3 victory Friday night, then scored off a rebound for the game-winner 53 seconds later.
Â
The Tigers (6-21-1, 4-13-1 NCHC) had an opportunity to even the game when Sammy Spurrell was called for a five-minute checking from behind penalty with 2:30 left, and even with Nahama off the ice for an extra attacker for the final 1:22, CC could not get the equalizer.
Â
"We had some great chances in the third period," Haviland said. "We still have to play 60 full minutes, not 56 or 57."
Â
Nehama was excellent in between the Bulldogs' first and second goal, making no less than six spectacular saves to keep CC in the lead. He finished the game with 32 saves. Â Â Â
Â
UMD's Dan Molenaar opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game with a wrister from the point on the game's first shot. Toni Cameranesi made contact with Nehama before the shot entered the net, but after a review by the officials it was determined that he was pushed into Nehama by sophomore
Nate Kwiecinski.
Â
The Tigers evened things up at 1-1 when freshman
Trey Bradley scored his ninth goal of the season at the 5:48 mark of the opening period. Junior
Christian Heil started the play by getting the puck to senior
Cody Bradley at the CC blue line. Cody skated through the middle of the ice and flipped a pass over the stick of a UMD defender to his younger brother, who placed a backhander past UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo.
Â
The Bulldogs (11-11-5, 7-8-3-1 NCHC) appeared to take a 2-1 lead with six seconds left in the first but the officials deemed that Nehama was interfered with just before Welinski's shot from the left point went in the net.
Â
Senior
Hunter Fejes put the Tigers ahead 2-1 with his team-high 13th goal of the season at the 5:44 mark of the second period. After Spurrell was called for tripping, the Tigers won the ensuing faceoff and Fejes, who was standing right in front of the net, redirected a shot by
Teemu Kivihalme past Kaskisuo.
Â
Cody Bradley, who also collected an assist on Fejes' goal, posted his first multi-assist game of the season and had four points (1g,3a) on the weekend.
Â
CC was 1-for-6 on the power play and killed off all four of UMD's extra-man advantages. Cameranesi led all players with five shots and Kaskisuo made 21 saves, including a big glove save on
Cody Bradley with 6:48 left in the game.
Â
The Tigers are idle next weekend before hosting Denver on Thursday, Feb. 18 at The Broadmoor World Arena.
