Box Score Mariel Gutierrez scored on a penalty kick late in the first overtime to give the University of Northern Colorado a 2-1 victory over visiting Colorado College in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Jackson Stadium.

CC broke through in the 12th minute when sophomore midfielder Lauren Milliett found the net on a direct kick into the lower left corner, and it appeared that goal would hold up until there were only 62 seconds remaining in regulation.

That's when Gutierrez leveled the score by heading a cross from Maddie Roberts into the upper right corner.

Freshman midfielder Ansley Queen nearly gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute, but her shot rang off the post.

The Bears caught another break in overtime when a Colorado College defender was booked for tripping in the box on a cross.

Junior goalkeeper Rowan Frederiksen, who was making her first appearance since the 2014 Mountain West Championship game, finished with eight saves for CC.

Madeline Burdick stopped five shots for Northern Colorado.

Both teams launched 16 shots, but the Bears registered an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tigers lead the all-time series 15-2-1, but UNC is 2-1-1 in the last four meetings.
