Box Score Sophomore
Clara Richter scored the game's only goal and freshman
Molly Hiniker posted her second career shutout to help Colorado College defeat Utah Valley University, 1-0, in the Tigers' home opener Sunday at Washburn Field.
Richter struck for her team-high fourth goal and third game winner of the season in the 83rd minute after chipping the ball over a UVU defender and slipping the ball past goalie Sarah Davis into the left side of the net.
Â
The Tigers had some good scoring chances before Richter broke through, including a shot by freshman
Sarah Lyons that just cleared the crossbar from 25 yards out in the 79th minute. Senior
Dana Gornick had a good look after splitting a pair of defenders in the 31st minute, but couldn't get off a shot.
Â
Hiniker, meanwhile, had to make just one save, grabbing a long shot by Libby Weber in the 13th minute. She wasn't pressured the rest of the game thanks to a stingy defensive unit as the Tigers evened their record at 3-3. Utah Valley University fell to 4-3.
"This was a very complete game against a really good opponent," head coach
Geoff Bennett said. "Utah Valley has had some impressive results this season and for us to play like this after a road game (at Cincinnati) on Friday and a hard travel weekend, I am extremely thrilled."
Â
The Tigers improved to 23-8-2 in home openers, including a 10-2-1 mark under Bennett. CC has won four consecutive home openers and is 4-0-1 in their last five.
Colorado College's three-game homestand continues on Friday, Sept. 16 against UMass-Lowell beginning at 3 p.m.
