Box Score Highlights
12th-ranked North Dakota rallied from a 2-0 first period deficit and scored five unanswered goals, including four in the final six minutes, to defeat Colorado College 5-2 Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
The Tigers (6-17-2, 2-11-2 NCHC) jumped all over the defending national champions in the first period as freshmen
Kade Kehoe and
Alex Berardinelli scored for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Kehoe opened the scoring at the 9:36 mark when he crashed the net and chipped the puck over the left shoulder of UND goalie Matej Tomek, who started the first game of his career in place of the injured Cam Johnson. Sophomores
Ben Israel and
Trevor Gooch each collected an assist on Kehoe's third career goal.
Â
Berardinelli scored his fifth career goal at the 12:40 mark after intercepting a pass at the red line and firing a slap shot past Tomek from the left circle. With the goal, Berardinelli took over sole possession of third place on the team in scoring with 10 points.
Â
Matt Hrynkiw replaced Tomek at the beginning of the second period for North Dakota (14-9-3, 7-7-1-1) and the Fighting Hawks chipped away during the middle frame. Trevor Olson scored the only goal of the period and cut the lead in half with his second tally of the season at the 4:34 mark. The Fighting Hawks kept the pressure on the rest of the frame, but CC freshman goalie
Alex Leclerc was outstanding in the net, making 17 of his 38 saves in the second period.
Â
The Tigers had a great opportunity to increase their lead midway through the third period, but could not convert a short 5-on-3 opportunity or the 1:50 of power-play time. Leclerc did what he could to prevent UND from evening the score, but that's just what they did when Hayden Shaw sent a shot through traffic from the left point that found the back of the net with 5:19 remaining in the final period.
Â
Dixon Bowen scored the game-winner on a clean breakaway with 2:46 remaining in the third and Shane Gersich made it 4-2 just 21 seconds later with a wrister from the left circle. Joel Janatuinen wrapped up the scoring with an empty-netter at the 19:27 mark.
Â
North Dakota had 43 shots, the second-most allowed by the Tigers this season, while CC had 23.
Â
The two teams meet again on Saturday, beginning at 6:05 p.m. Â Â
