Box Score Highlights
Freshman
Alex Leclerc made a career-high 45 saves to lead Colorado College past defending national champion and 12
th-ranked North Dakota, 3-0, Saturday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
Leclerc was spectacular in helping the Tigers gain their first win of the season at home and first victory over North Dakota since March 15, 2014 (snapping an 0-13-1 winless streak). He made 16 saves in the first period and 21 in the second, including 12 during UND's three power plays, for his second career shutout and CC's first blanking of North Dakota since Jan. 5, 2007.
Â
"Alex was great in net," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "He kept us in the game during the first period. Our penalty kill didn't give up a goal all weekend (9 for 9) and that is a potent power play over there."
Â
Senior
Luc Gerdes had a goal and an assist Saturday night, scoring the game-winner with just 30 seconds remaining in the first period when his shot from the left side of the net bounced off UND defenseman Casey Johnson's leg and into the net past goalie Matt Hrynkiw.
Â
The Tigers (7-17-2, 3-11-2 NCHC) survived the second period with some outstanding special teams play by killing three penalties. The Fighting Hawks (14-10-3, 7-8-1-1) had 21 shots during the middle frame, compared to just seven for CC.
Â
"Anytime your special teams can win those wars, it is huge," Haviland said. "We got better as the game went on." Â Â
Â
The third period was not as lopsided, with each team getting eight shots on goal. North Dakota head coach Brad Berry pulled Hrynkiw with just under two minutes remaining and senior
Sam Rothstein capitalized with an empty-net goal off a feed from Gerdes at the 19:09 mark, then freshman
Alex Berardinelli did the same just 27 seconds later for the game's final tally.
Â
"This is a huge win for our program," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "This team showed character and grit tonight."
Â
The Fighting Hawks' 45 shots equaled the most allowed by CC this season (Jan. 6 at Minnesota Duluth). CC attempted 20 shots Saturday night and Hrynkiw made 17 saves.
Â
The Tigers have a week off before continuing their rivalry with the University of Denver. The teams will play at Magness Arena on Friday, Feb. 10 and The Broadmoor World Arena on Saturday, Feb. 11.
