Tigers Battle No. 1 Minnesota Duluth to 2-2 Draw

Box Score Saturday's Game Notes

Seniors Sam Rothstein and Matt Hansen scored and freshman Alex Leclerc made a career-high 43 saves as Colorado College battled No. 1 Minnesota Duluth to a 2-2 tie Friday night in Duluth, Minn.

The Tigers were less than one minute away from pulling off the upset, but UND's Neal Pionk scored as the Bulldogs had an extra skater with 41.7 seconds left in regulation. Pionk fired a one-timer past Leclerc to even the score at 2-2, then did the same on the power play just 18 seconds into the second overtime to give UMD the extra point in the NCHC standings.

The Bulldogs (12-3-4, 8-2-1 NCHC) opened the scoring when Avery Peterson's shot from the left boards deflected off CC defenseman Andrew Farny's leg into the net at the 13:56 mark of the first period.

Colorado College (5-12-2, 1-6-2 NCHC) responded with a shorthanded goal from Rothstein at the 15:36 mark. Fellow senior Luc Gerdes started a 2-on-1 and fed Rothstein in the slot, who flipped a shot past UMD goalie Hunter Miska for his second shorthander of the season and third of his career.

Hansen put the Tigers ahead 2-1 with a power-play goal at the 7:40 mark of the second period. Just moments after Peterson was called for a five-minute checking from behind penalty, Hansen took a pass from junior Teemu Kivihalme and blasted a shot over the shoulder of Miska for his first goal of the season. Gerdes assisted on that play as well and now has six points (2g, 4a) in his last five games.

Leclerc continued his brilliant play for the Tigers, who are 2-1-2 in their last five games. He turned away 19 of UMD's 20 shots in the third period, including a breakaway attempt by Dominic Toninato at the 6:22 mark of the third period to preserve a 2-1 lead. Leclerc also saved all four shots in the first overtime, including a couple when the Tigers were shorthanded for the final 1:28 of the period after a tripping call on Nick Halloran.

"Anytime you tie the No. 1 team in the country on the road, it is quite an accomplishment," head coach Mike Haviland said. "It is nice to come out with a point but I feel bad for the guys because they really played hard tonight."

UMD held a 45-18 advantage in shots, but was 0-for-5 on the power play, marking the fourth time in the last five games the CC penalty kill has been perfect. The Tigers attempted just three shots on goal in the third period and overtime and Miska finished the game with 16 saves.

"Our penalty kill has been really good lately," Haviland said. "Guys are blocking shots and the shorthanded goal was big for our confidence."

The two teams play again Saturday night, beginning at 7:07 p.m. (CT).
