CC Sweeps Johnson & Wales in SCAC Tune-up

Box Score Second-ranked Colorado College tuned up for the final two weeks of conference play with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday night.

Playing for just the second time since Oct. 1, the Tigers improved to 19-1 with their 12th sweep of the year.

Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Mullen recorded a team-leading eight kills for CC. Junior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean and freshman outside hitter Allie Freeburg added seven and six kills, respectively.

Sophomore libero Anna Gurolnick had 10 digs and Steffey-Bean had three blocked shots to lead the Tiger defense.

Despite never having the lead, the Wildcats put up a good fight early in the first set and trailed just 12-9 after a Colorado College service error. However, the Tigers scored five of the next six points to open a 17-10 lead and never saw its advantage dip below five points.

CC raced to a 15-4 advantage in the second set and took its largest lead at 20-8 on a Wildcat error.

JWU led for the first and only time at 2-1 early in the third set, but the Tigers scored eight of the next nine points to build a 9-3 lead. The Wildcats trimmed their deficit to 12-11, only to have a serving error ignite a 7-2 Colorado College run. Three points was as close as Johnson & Wales would get the rest of the way.

Senior right side hitter Erin Sosnowchik led JWU with nine kills, while seniors Katie Malachinski and Erynn Keeney added six apiece.

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Paxton led the Wildcat defense with a match-high 13 digs.

CC puts first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference on the line this week with three divisional matches at Reid Arena. The Tigers play host the University of Dallas at 6 p.m. Friday, then Austin College and Centenary College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

With its perfect 7-0 conference record, Colorado College holds a one-match lead over Trinity University atop the SCAC standings heading into this weekend's matches.

Johnson & Wales, which slipped to 2-20, and CC will meet again on Saturday, Oct. 28, in the Spike It Up! Classic on the final day of the regular season.
