Box Score Colorado College did everything it could to extend its 18-match winning streak, but Division II Colorado Christian University did just enough to hang on for a 25-13, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23 victory on Wednesday night.
The Cougars had to withstand a furious CC comeback in the fourth set when the Tigers utilized a 7-1 run to pull to within a point at 22-21. Unfortunately, CCU was able to side out on its next three serve receives to close out the match.
Colorado College (18-1) led for most of the early stages of the first set and were ahead 15-12 after a kill by sophomore middle hitter
Marguerite Spaethling. However, the Cougars fought back with an 8-3 run to take a 20-18 lead.
A pair of kills by sophomore outside hitter
Haley Harris leveled the score at 21-21, but CCU's senior middle hitter Angela Jurek had a kill and two blocks to give her team a three-point lead and senior right side hitter Sophia Proano terminated set point.
The teams split the next two sets by decisive scores to extend the match, which turned out to be a statistical draw. The combined point was just as close at Colorado Christian 92, Colorado College 89.Â
Another bright spot for the Tigers is that because they were playing up a division, the loss will not affect their national ranking.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jordan Mullen led the Colorado College attack with 12 kills, while Spaethling finished with 10.
Senior middle hitter
Glenna Yancey had an impressive defensive effort for the Tigers, finishing with a match-high six blocked shots.
Sophomore libero
Anna Gurolnick recorded a match-high 22 digs, her fourth match of the season with 20 or more.
Proano recorded a match-high 15 kills for CCU, which improved to 8-7 overall. The Cougars currently are fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 5-1 record.
Freshman outside hitter Jacey Johnson recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
After playing its fifth match in a span of five days, CC will take a few days off before playing its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Denver's Johnson & Wales University.
