Trey Bradley scored twice for Colorado College but the Tigers could not overcome four Omaha power-play goals and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Mavericks Friday night at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
CC (6-5-0, 2-3-0 NCHC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Jack Gates notched his second goal of the season at the 5:19 mark of the first period. During an odd-man rush, Troy Conzo got the puck to Branden Makara, who sent it to the front of the net. Gates was right there to poke it past Omaha goalie Evan Weninger.
Â
Bradley made it 2-0 at the 7:10 mark of the second period when he took a pass from Mason Bergh and went in all alone on Weninger. Bradley moved the puck to his backhand and, as Weninger dove, Bradley placed it in the open net.
Â
CC had trouble staying out of the penalty box the rest of the second period, and the Mavericks (4-2-1, 1-0-0 NCHC) took full advantage by scoring three power-play goals and four overall before the end of the frame.
Â
David Pope started things off with a power-play goal at the 8:50 mark that made it 2-1, then Tyler Vesel (PPG) and Tristan Keck (even strength) scored just 43 seconds apart to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead at the 12:11 mark. Steven Spinner made it 4-2 at the 17:32 mark with another power-play goal.
Â
Bradley put some life back into the home crowd when he scored with just 5.8 seconds left in the second period to cut the Omaha lead to 4-3. Nick Halloran got the puck to Bergh, whose shot was saved by Weninger, but it went right to Bradley at the right circle and he put home his third of the season. Halloran, as well as Bergh, assisted on both of Bradley's goals.
Â
Pope scored the Mavericks' fourth power-play goal at the 8:24 mark of the third period to close the scoring. Jake Randolph and Jordan Klehr each had two assists for Omaha.
Â
The Mavericks were 4-for-6 on the power play, while CC was scoreless in four opportunities. Omaha outshot the Tigers, 38-29. Weninger finished the game with 26 saves and CC's Alex Leclerc had 33.Â
Â
Despite the loss, the Tigers are still tied for first place in the NCHC standings with six points, even with St. Cloud State, Western Michigan and North Dakota.
Â
The teams will meet again on Saturday night, beginning at 6 p.m.
