Mason Bergh scored with 6.8 seconds left in the third period to help Colorado College snap a 14-game losing streak to Denver with a 4-4 tie against the No. 1-ranked Pioneers Friday night at Magness Arena. Â Â
Â
After a scoreless five-minute 5-on-5 overtime period,
Christiano Versich scored with 1:24 left in the second overtime with the Tigers on a 4x3 power play to give CC an extra point in the NCHC standings. Versich took a pass from Bergh at the right circle and placed a shot just inside the far post that beat Denver goalie Tanner Jaillet.
Â
Jaakko Heikkinen put Denver (9-3-3, 5-3-1-1 NCHC) ahead 4-3 with 2:28 left in the third period, and it looked like the Pioneers would continue their dominance over the Tigers. However, with Tiger goalie
Alex Leclerc on the bench for the last 50 seconds in favor of an extra attacker,
Cole McCaskill took a shot from the slot that was saved by Jaillet. A scrum ensued at the top of the crease and the puck scooted out to Bergh at the edge of the right circle and he buried a shot top shelf to even the score.
Â
Bergh, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, was outstanding once again as part of CC's top line with
Nick Halloran and
Trey Bradley. Halloran scored twice and added an assist, while Bradley had a helper.
Â
The Tigers (7-7-1, 3-5-1-1 NCHC) took a 1-0 lead with just 7.7 seconds remaining in the first period when
Trevor Gooch sent a pass from the right boards to a streaking
Kristian Blumenschein, who redirected the puck past Jalliet for his first tally of the season.
Westin Michaud started the play with a back-handed cross-ice pass to Gooch, who carried the puck into the zone before finding Blumenschein in front of the net.
Â
"That was a great goal by Kristian and a great pass by Trevor," head coach
Mike Haviland said.
Â
Denver evened the game at 1-1 at the 5:26 mark of the first as Logan O'Connor took a pass behind the net from Colin Staub and put a wraparound shot past Leclerc to the far post.
Â
Halloran, Bergh and Bradley connected with 4:29 left in the second for a 2-1 Tiger lead. Bradley forced a DU turnover in its own end, then found Bergh in the left corner. Bergh sent a perfect pass at the front of the net to Halloran, who was blanketed by two DU defenders, but somehow put the puck between Jalliet's legs for his sixth goal and team-high 20
th point of the season. Bergh and Bradley each posted his 10
th assist of the season on the play.
Â
The Pioneers scored twice in the final two minutes of the second period for a 3-2 advantage after 40 minutes and both goals came off of plays from behind the Tiger net. Dylan Gambrell tied the game with 1:56 left after collecting the puck behind Leclerc, skating out to the right circle and firing a shot that found the net, then Ian Mitchell scored on a wraparound of his own that deflected off Leclerc's leg with just 16 seconds remaining in the frame.
Â
Colorado College killed off two penalties in the first half of the third period, then Halloran evened the score at 3-all with his second of the night at the 11:05 mark. Bergh fired a shot from the left point that was saved by Jalliet, but the puck came right to Halloran in front and after one quick move, had an open net.
Â
"All the credit goes to the guys leading this team," Haviland said. "There was no panic going into the third period. We kept saying 'we can win this game.'"
Â
While Halloran, Bergh and Bradley collected seven points, DU's top line of Jarid Lukosevicius, Henrik Borgstrom and Troy Terry was held scoreless.
Â
"We really wanted to frustrate them tonight and I think we did," Bergh said.
Â
The Pioneers outshot CC, 38-31, with LeClerc making 34 saves. Jalliet had 27 for Denver. Neither team officially scored on the power play. Colorado College was 0-for-2 and Denver was 0-for-4.
Â
The teams continue the battle for The Gold Pan on Saturday night at The Broadmoor World Arena, starting at 6 p.m.
