Box Score Adam Johnson scored a power-play goal with 4:44 to play in the third period to give No. 1-ranked Minnesota Duluth a 2-1 victory over Colorado College Friday night at the Broadmoor World Arena.
Johnson took a pass from Alex Iafallo in the slot and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Tiger goalie
Alex Leclerc. Dominic Toninato also collected an assist on Johnson's fourth game-winning goal of the season.
The Bulldogs (19-5-5, 13-4-2-2 NCHC) took a 1-0 lead at the 10:55 mark of the first period when Blake Young took a shot from the left boards that snuck between Leclerc's pads and the near post. Dan Molenaar and Jared Thomas gathered assists on the play.
The Tigers (7-20-2, 3-14-2) fought back and evened the score with a power-play tally from freshman
Bryce Van Horn at the 13:32 mark of the first period. With CC rushing the net, Van Horn collected a rebound in front and placed a backhander past Duluth netminder Hunter Miska. Senior
Sam Rothstein and sophomore
Mason Bergh assisted on Van Horn's third career goal. Bergh now leads the team with 19 points after collecting his sixth helper of the campaign.
"We did a pretty good job with the game plan tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "We did what we were supposed to, but you can't make a mistake with five minutes left to play against the best team in the country."
Both teams had chances to take the lead in the second period but came up empty and the Tigers did not capitalize on a five-minute power-play early in the third when Karson Kuhlman was called for a major boarding penalty. CC was called for the final three penalties of the third period, including a slashing call against
Teemu Kivihalme after Joey Anderson snuck past the Tiger defense for a breakaway that led to Johnson's game-winning goal.
"We had some good chances in the second, but we needed a little more killer instinct around the net," Haviland said. "We have to build off what we did tonight."
Leclerc finished the game with 27 saves, while Miska made 20. CC was 1-for-3 on the power-play and the Bulldogs converted just one of five chances with a man advantage.
