Box Score Highlights
Colorado College and No. 6 Western Michigan officially skated to a 3-3 draw Friday night, but it felt like a victory for the Tigers when freshman
Alex Berardinelli scored with less than a second left in the second overtime period. The goal gave CC the extra point in the NCHC standings and some much needed momentum entering Saturday's home finale.
Â
With five seconds left in the 3x3 overtime period, Berardinelli stole the puck in his own end, streaked down the right side and placed a wrister from the top of the right circle past WMU goalie Ben Blacker that sent the 5,682 fans at The Broadmoor World Arena into a frenzy.
Â
"That was a huge goal by Alex," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "It was great for our fans to see a game like that and an ending like that."
Â
The Tigers (7-20-4, 3-14-4-1 NCHC) started the game strong, putting 16 shots on Blacker in the first 20 minutes, and senior
Matt Hansen put CC ahead 1-0 at the 9:03 mark with a one-timer from the slot during a 5-on-3 advantage. Sophomore
Mason Bergh and freshman
Kristian Blumenschein assisted on the play.
Â
The Broncos (18-8-5, 11-8-2-1) stormed back to even the game on a goal by Sheldon Dries with 1:39 left in the first, then took the lead just 2:04 into the second thanks to a power-play goal by Griffen Molino.
Â
Sophomore
Trevor Gooch evened the score at 2-2 with 2:51 left in the middle frame when he took a pass from behind the net by sophomore
Westin Michaud and hit the net behind Blacker. Senior
Sam Rothstein then made a great individual play just 1:38 later to give CC a 3-2 lead. After Hansen dumped the puck behind the WMU net, Rothstein stole it from Blacker, moved in front and snapped a shot over Blacker's shoulder.
Â
"I like how we responded the entire game," Haviland said. "Trevor and Westin have really put a string of good games together."
Â
Hugh McGing scored 1:14 into the third period to make it a 3-3 game, and Blacker made no less than three saves on point-blank shots later in the period to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
Â
The Tigers had 40 shots on goal, the second-most in a game this season, including a season-high six by Gooch, while Berardinelli tied his career-high with five shots. Freshman goalie
Alex Leclerc made 27 saves for CC and Blacker finished the game with 37.
Â
The two teams will battle Saturday night beginning at 6 p.m. CC's six seniors, Rothstein, Hansen,
Luc Gerdes,
Christian Heil,
Derek Shatzer and student assistant coach
Zach Aman, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
