Box Score Matheson Iacopelli had a goal and an assist and Ben Blacker stopped 27 of 28 shots as No. 6 Western Michigan spoiled Colorado College's home finale with a 5-1 victory Saturday at The Broadmoor World Arena.
Â
After Frederik Tiffels opened the scoring with a power-play goal midway through the first period, Luke Bafia gathered the puck behind his own net and found Iacopelli at the CC blue line behind the Tiger defense. Iacopelli skated in all alone and beat CC goalie
Alex Leclerc for the game-winning goal at the 7:07 mark of the second period.
Â
Cam Lee made it 3-0 just four minutes later, but the Tigers showed some life as sophomore
Trevor Gooch scored on the power-play for his second goal of the weekend and third of the season to cut the lead to 3-1 at the 12:41 mark of the second. Fellow sophomore
Cole McCaskill found senior
Luc Gerdes below the left circle and Gerdes sent a pass across the crease to Gooch, who had a wide open net from the right circle.
Â
The Tigers (7-21-4, 3-15-4-1 NCHC) couldn't get out of the middle frame with just a two-goal deficit, however, as WMU's Corey Schueneman scored a power-play goal of his own with 2:10 left in the period.
Â
Hugh McGing capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 4:21 mark of the third.
Â
The Broncos (19-8-5, 12-8-2-1 NCHC) capitalized on two of their three power-play opportunities, while CC was 1-for-6. The Tigers outshot WMU, 31-29.
Â
"It looked like we didn't have any legs tonight," head coach
Mike Haviland said. "I don't know if was because we used so much energy last night, but we need to be more consistent from Friday to Saturday."
Â
The Tigers honored their six seniors in a pre-game ceremony. In addition to Gerdes, team captain
Sam Rothstein,
Matt Hansen,
Christian Heil,
Derek Shatzer and student assistant coach
Zach Aman were honored.
