Saturday's Game Notes
Troy Terry scored a goal and added two assists in the first half of the second period to lead No. 1 Denver to a 4-1 victory over Colorado College Friday night in the first game of the best-of-three NCHC first-round series at Magness Arena.
Â
The Tigers appeared to take a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period when
Matt Hansen put the puck past DU goalie Tanner Jaillet on a wraparound, but after a lengthy review, the officials determined the puck did not completely cross the goal line, upholding the original call of no goal.
Â
"We played well the first 20 minutes," head coach
Mike Haviland said.
Â
After the scoreless first period, Terry opened the scoring just 1:37 into the second period when he gathered a rebound and his shot from the right circle deflected off Tiger defenseman
Andrew Farny past goalie
Alex Leclerc.
Â
Then, after a too many men penalty on the Tigers, Terry then set up the Pioneers' next two goals, scored by Liam Finlay at the 6:48 mark and Blake Hillman at 9:11, to give DU a 3-0 lead midway through the middle frame.
Â
Sophomore
Westin Michaud cut the lead to 3-1 at the 10:56 mark of the middle frame.
Trevor Gooch got the puck to
Ben Israel, who carried it down the left side and found Michaud in the slot. Michaud then fired a wrist shot over Jaillet's left shoulder for his fifth goal of the season.
Â
"We made a big mistake with the too many men penalty, but we pinned them in a bit the last eight minutes of the second period," Haviland said.
Â
Matt Marcinew added a power-play goal with 7:24 left in the third period to close the scoring, one of DU's 18 shots in the third period, en route to a 46-22 advantage for the game. Leclerc finished the game with 42 saves, the third-most in one game in his career, while Jaillet had 21.
Â
The Tigers had only two power-play opportunities in the game, while DU converted on two of their six man advantage situations.
Â
The two teams will battle in game two of the series Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m.
Â
"Our backs are against the wall, it's win or go home." Haviland said. "We have to compete for a full 60 minutes tomorrow."
