Szpara Selected for Local Sports Hall of Fame

Four-time All-American Janine Szpara, who helped the Colorado College women's soccer team post a combined 62-15-3 record and make four NCAA Tournament appearances during her career as CC's starting goalkeeper, has been selected for induction into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame.

Szpara joins Chuck Wielgus, the former Executive Director of USA Swimming, the legendary Donner Family of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, former collegiate and NBA basketball coach Henry "Hank" Egan, All-American basketball player Pat Garrity and the 1998 Gold-Medal winning USA Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team in the Class of 2017.

Szpara still holds Colorado College's career records for starts (78), victories (60), shutouts (45) and goals-against average (0.77).

In 1986, she posted a 17-4-1 record while leading the Tigers to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament, where they dropped a 2-0 decision to the University of North Carolina.

During her collegiate career, Szpara earned six international caps and was a member of the 1986 Women's National Team that was inducted into the U.S Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1988, she was named the Adidas Goalkeeper of the Year after posting a 14-3-1 record with the Tigers.

Following her college career, Szpara continued to be a member of the U.S. National pool from 1988-1991 and made appearances against Germany, England and Russia.

The Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame has honored greats like Peggy Fleming, Goose Gossage, William Thayer Tutt, Bobby Unser, Bob Mathias, Dave Ogrean, Bonnie Blair, 1980 USA Olympic Ice Hockey Team, Bill Hybl, Marty Louthan, Ben Martin, Amy Van Dyken, Ken Hatfield, Fisher DeBerry, Earl "Dutch" Clark, David and Hayes Jenkins, Chris Fowler, Rulon Gardner, Peter Geronazzo and Horst Richardson.

The Hall of Fame is a celebration of the city's rich sports history and the famed inductees honored has made it one of the most popular events for hundreds each year to attend. Attendees will have the chance to meet the Class of 2017 as well as enjoy a reception and dinner celebrating their accomplishments. The evening will include a silent auction with sports memorabilia, event tickets, getaways, etc.
